Villeneuve makes it 2 in a row
Jacques Villeneuve has propelled himself into the title picture with his second win in as many races. It looked as if Firman and Fisichella were going to make it a Jordan 1-2 but it was a stunning drive and team performance that gave Villeneuve the victory.
It was a terrible race for championship leader Trulli. Trulli was running in a comfortable fourth but was in a major scrap for that position. De La Rosa tried to make a move but instead took out Trulli. It was De La Rosa that paid the full price but Trulli never looked the same after the incident and finished a lowly 10th.
Mistakes were very costly for the front runners as it looked like everyone had a good car underneath them. Webber punted off Button early on and both lost time. Ralf Schumacher, Pizzonia, Irvine, Barrichello, Heidfeld and Coulthard all made mistakes which cost them valuable time.
Wilson crashed out on lap but the TV cameras didn't pick up on his stricken car. Raikkonen saw his championship challenge take a dent when he developed transmission problems. He was forced to retire on lap 43. Da Matta was having an almighty scrap with Ralf Schumacher but made a big mistake and crashed out on lap 55. Pizzonia ended a quiet race for him when his car developed a water leak and stopped on lap 64.
Villeneuve has driven 2 supreme races to kick off his championship challenge and is the winner of the Austrian Grand Prix. Firman and Fisichella were hoping for a bit better but will take 2nd and 3rd respectively. Firman is now only 2 points behind Trulli in the championship. Alonso continues his steady points scoring with 4th. World Champion Panis scores his first points of the season with 5th place. Michael Schumacher makes it two points finishes in a row with 6th. Button and Coulthard complete the points places with 7th and 8th places.
