Strategy the key as Villeneuve makes it two Spanish Grand Prix's in a row

Jacques Villeneuve finally shows why he was close to winning the Championship last year with a stunning win that involved his speed and his strategy. Alonso got to a good start as Villeneuve got stuck behind a few cars but the strategy helped Villeneuve claw the time back and he overtook Alonso after the second round of pit stops and held Alonso's late charge off to win.

It looked pretty good for Montoya, as he looked like he had a faster car but his race ended early. Montoya tried to overtake Wilson but got it wrong and spun. In an attempt to recover, Montoya spun right in front of Michael Schumacher. Schumacher had nowhere to go except into Montoya's left front wheel. The damage to Montoya's car was terminal and he retired on lap 3. Michael Schumacher escaped with just front wing damage but the amount of time lost was extensive.

It was a race of few mistakes but any mistakes that were made, they were very costly. Raikkonen did his Championship challenge no good by spinning early. Both Toyota's were in the wars again. Da Matta spun and his race got worse when he took out Webber after losing control of his car, leading to both cars retiring on lap 50. Panis spun while in a points scoring position. Frentzen's dismal season continues with a retirement on lap 29 with an oil fire. De La Rosa had a loose wheel and was too dangerous to continue so retired on lap 36. Some other spinners were Ralf Schumacher, Webber and Wilson.

Villeneuve has won the Spanish Grand Prix twice now. He is the first driver to win the same race more than once. Alonso looked dead set to win but had to settle for second. Trulli's consistent running gives him third. Button finishes in the points again in fourth. Firman emerges as Trulli's closest challenger after getting fifth place. Irvine scores his first points with sixth. Coulthard and Verstappen finish 7th and 8th respectively.
