Lately i had planned to do a format as it has been about a year and you know that you get to that point when your PC is that much slower than when it's zipping along for the first week or 2 after a format. But as i fear forgetting somthing when i back up alot of files this time i thought i would do a big old clean of the drive and try to recapture some of that lost speed.

I went to alot of forums that i post on asking around for what software is most likely to help out with my speed woes and they suggested several things.

All of these have trail version or free versions.

Diskeeper: This is a defrag program, and has probably made the most difference to my overall speed, the windows defragger is ok, but this one you really notice.

Ashampoo WinOptimizer Platinum Suite 2: This is really a replacement for disk clean, but it does it alot faster and it is able to clean up your registry without you having to do anything, it also has a start up tuner so you can see whats booting up when your computer starts and you can stop it if you don't want a curtain thing using resources at start up.

Tune XP: This is more for gaming, IGN have several articles on the settings to improve FPS on higher end games like battlefield 2 and Half life2, i wouldn't suggest just getting it and trying things out as you may do real damage to your set up.

Ad-Aware SE Personal: most of you probably already run this, but it's a great anti-spyware program.

AVG: good for removing viruses and other harmful things.

Spy Bot search and destroy: Everyone needs this if you are running Internet explorer.

After running all these i have noticed a fair difference and i am thinking about not formating for a while more as i really don't think it needs it, sure nothing beats a good clensing but if you do all these you can put it off for a while.
