Easy does it for Heidfeld as the rain come down

Nick Heidfeld has won the San Marino Grand Prix, his first career win, in less than ideal conditions. The rain was constant but no one made many mistakes until the rain came down a little harder about halfway through the race.

The mistakes came thick and fast when Frentzen spun on lap 30. Frentzen spun again later on, Panis, De La Rosa, Da Matta, Irvine, Raikkonen and Webber all spun due to the wet conditions. The wet conditions also caused a few collisions. Fisichella and Ralf Schumacher, Trulli and Barrichello and Fisichella and Webber all collided with each other.

Villeneuve continued his pathetic start to the season when he spun on lap 41 and couldn't escape the gravel trap to retire. Ralf Schumacher retired on lap 50 with transmission problems and Pizzonia went out a lap later with the same problem. Webber retired on lap 60 with a puncture after a race which saw him spin 3 times. Webber was later classified 19th. Raikkonen was running 4th and would have joined Trulli at the top of the championship standings until his suspension failed on the last lap and was classified 14th.

Heidfeld drove perfectly and fought off the early pressure from Coulthard and Wilson to win. Wilson finally converted his grid position into points with 2nd place. Button pushed Wilson all the way but faded away near the end and settled for 3rd. Montoya was in a monumental scrap for 4th place with Irvine, Verstappen, De La Rosa, Michael Schumacher and Firman. Irvine was holding them all up until he spun and Montoya held off the pack to take 4th. Verstappen and De La Rosa were 5th and 6th and Michael Schumacher and Firman rounded out the points places.

So, we are at the quarter distance of the season and the championship is still totally wide open. Only 5 drivers have yet to score points but every team has scored points. Anyone can still win the championship! The next round is in Spain and is known to be extremely hard on tyres. Trulli will want to keep his lead in the championship but it will be tough.

Keep it tuned to the SR F1 Championship!

Fisichella caused two accidents. He was trying to overtake Ralf but it was slippery and he tapped Ralf round and spun himself. About 10 laps later, it was an identical move but on Webber this time. The same result happened. It was not a great race for Fisichella.

Rock on! 3rd!
Nice to see I've got all of BAR's points. What a mug Dog Breath is! Anyway, hope Button can get another podium in Spain.
