My personal defence for Man Utd obtaining high numbers of penalties compared to the likes of West Brom for example is simply that Man Utd have 10 outfoeld players that are all capable of wrong footing a defender or commiting a defender into a rash lunging tackle, or in some cases the defender simply has no choice to hack down a player who is about to 'pull the trigger'.
Man Utd have so much quality and alot of defences cant live with them and are almost forced to foul them in the penalty area either by means of a last ditch effort to prevent a certain goal or because they are just dazzled and instinctively leave a trailing leg out, i believe that 'if' a player is touched inside the penalty are it is his right to fall over if he wants... how many times do we hear commentators saying things like 'he was definately touched there and im surprised he stayed on his feet when he could have got a penalty' a foul in the area is a foul and if seen by the referee often results in a penalty, if Man Utd are past masters at this tactic then good for them, its their right to fall over if fouled. Thats my view on this.
Which is exactly one third!
That ratio has only shot up becasue of the penalties coming thick and fast over the last couple weeks. I'm sure Van man will score more goals in open play during the last few weeks in the season. Hopefully starting by opening his account against Arsenal...
He seems to have a little problem in scoring goals against the premierships top teams, but has teams such as Juventus, Real Madrid, and Deportivo on his champions league account (and all from open play!!!!)
6. Which is nothing shocking in 33 games.

Maybe by Man Uniteds standards! :P
SIDE NOTE: Would the Van Man be as deadly a striker if somebody else took the pens? It would take his goal-ratio down to the Nationwide.
:D

Could be Beattie or Shearer.
and one ref giving 6 pens all at old trafford. mmmm fair as fair can be. just luck i guess.
2 situations.
1) ipswich beating man u at the end of last season, referee has a perfect view of a dive by rvn and gives a pen which he scores. ipswich are then relegated.
2) minute 3, man u V west ham, defoe gets taken down by clumsy neville 2, nothing given.
19 goals by penalties, what a jip for the golden boot. i hope henry holds him off.
