He's a top athelete, he's brave and he's a risk taker. He cares about the fans and the other wrestlers more then he does himself.
He's got a great sense of humour. Just look at the four Smackdown's before Summerslam. If you didn't find the promos between Rey Mysterio and Kurt funny, then you've got a sense of humour failure.
He is what draws in the most money. When he's a heel, people love to hate him. It's a major blow to WWE and SmackDown in particular that Kurt is out. Even if it's only a week or a month, or even a year, it's still gunna hurt the WWE in many ways.

Kurt Angle is the best wrestler. Best wrestler - maybe not the most enthusiastic, or the best actor, but he's definitely the best actual wrestler. Closely followed by Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero.
