I recently setup my Dad's Samsung D8000 Smart TV, connecting it to his Freeola Broadband etc. - must admit we never went near 3D (I didn't even see the glasses!)...

I could, but for £2 more I get a version that will be useful if I get a 3DTV and a good quality video as well that I can watch on Apple TV and the iDevices without having to mess about finding software to take copy protection off the disc, copy it and stick it in the right format.
If it's only £2 more and you intend to use the format at some point then fair enough. Some 3D Blu Ray's (especially Disney's) can be very expensive, presumed Lion King would be one of those titles. I paid £12.50 for a region free US version and it looks and sounds fantastic. Apparently 3D Blu Ray's are not selling at all well in the US, could the format be the next HD-DVD?
I doubt it, as many new Blu-ray Players and TVs come with 3D now, so they're both being brought in to homes that way, plus they're used as standard Players and TVs too. Plus there is no alternative format, it's an extra really.
Besides, I've read that analysts predict 3D sales to rise in the US.

It comes with a DVD, could you not just transfer that to your mobile device? (seeing as it that kind of thing is supposed to be all legal now).

Don't really seem to buy many films these days but picked up Blu Ray of The Lion King the other day. Stunning transfer with awesome HD soundtrack, well recommended. Going to get TT : Closer To The Edge next week, looking forward to seeing that again without all the 3D nonsense (which added absolutely nothing to it), other than that it was the best film of 2011 IMO. Not just for bike racing nuts, my Mrs. has no interested in any kind of motorsport and she really liked it. Well worth sticking on your Lovefilm lists (if they actually have it as they seem to be getting pretty awful these days).
