I have read and re-read the Hobbit and LoR since 1972 and have very personal impressions of characters and settings in both. The best so far that has matched my impressions was an animated film that finished production after the first book of LoR and therefore was never completed and I cannot remember the company for the life of me!

The Hobbit is a classic read and what people forget, is that it is the origin of all things but not a precursor to LoR!

God forbid that they try to make a film of 'The Silmarillion' which is before LoR and sets the scene for all it's characters and is a particularly hard read :¬)[/i]

Totally in agreement there!

I shall, undoubtedly, see the new film at some point, but I'm still entirely unconvinced by the necessity to create 3 movies for such a short tale...and before anyone bite my head off, I am completely aware that the film extends beyond the Hobbit, taking in other Tolkien tales; still doesn't make it the right thing to do.

I shall reserve final judgement until I DO see the film, but until then I remain wholly unconvinced.

It'll be me that's up first on Christmas morning, waking the wife and son up, singing Christmas songs and asking "Can I open my presents now?"

I'm being told to shut up now! Love carols me, but Mrs DL doesn't quite like my rendition of them :¬D

Hoho ho chas ... like it but perhaps a bit of holly or festive lights! At least my bauble's golden haha :¬D

You know, in truth I'm probably the biggest kid in the place when it comes to Christmas.

It'll be me that's up first on Christmas morning, waking the wife and son up, singing Christmas songs and asking "Can I open my presents now?"

What do you mean, "anti-Xmas"?

I just happen to like sweets and know a few words in sheepish...

I'm like Dr Doolittle with fresh breath!:-)

Haven't seen it but I'm pretty sure those scores come from the illiterate crowd who never read The Hobbit and expected it to be another Lord of the Rings. Everyone's opinion on it that I trust has been good so far.

Now, oddly, I have read the Hobbit, and I'm finding it hard to summon a great deal of enthusiasm for the film, even though I loved the Lord of the Rings movie and adore all of the books...
