Starting from my first and ending with my newest game.
‘1080 snow boarding’
The match mode is difficult enough to beat, but even if you do, the possibilities beyond it are enormous. The contest mode is a real stroke of genius and then there is the time attack and trick attack, shear brilliance.
Firstly there is the Match race. What you have to do is race and beat either four, five or even six other racers depending on which difficulty setting you have it on. You begin the match race with three lives and each time you fail to beat your opponent you must start that race again but you’ll have lost a life.
If your board of the Match race but want to race on a track of your choice in an attempt to make new fastest times breaking all your before records. If so then Time attack is definitely the place for you. You can even save ghosts of yourself, so you know if you’re on target or not.
Maybe your fed up of racing on its own, maybe you want a race but be able to fit lots of amazingly high jumps with tricks to match. If this is so then Trick attack is the place for you. Basically you have to race through a course within a set time, fitting in as many stunts as possible to boost your points score higher and higher. Points are awarded for tricks, the better the tricks the more points you get and any time left after the race are converted to points.
The Two-player option gives you and a friend the chance to race each other mano-a-mano, to really find out the best. Or maybe you just want to play together messing about doing tricks and so forth. If so there is nothing stopping you. At the end of the day the two-player mode allows you and a friend just to have some great fun.
The Training mode is brilliant you can select to do the halfpipe or the jump track, both are brilliant fun. They’re really just somewhere that you can practice some new tricks and get to know your favourite rider even better.
Finally the Contest, the contest is basically racing down the courses weaving in and out of gates like a slalom. Occasionally you are taken to stunt arenas like the Big jump, where you launch yourself off a huge ski jump whilst pulling off the best tricks possible. But remember if you don’t land the jump then you can just say bye bye to all of your lovely points.
1080 snow boarding feature five of the greatest boarders the world has ever seen. All have their strengths and weaknesses, so choose carefully. While some are light and manoeuvrable, perfect for tricks. Others are powerful and fast and more suited to the head to head races. ‘Kensuke Kimachi’; Born in Japan. He is a great all rounder and a real tough cookie to beat.
‘Rob Haywood’; Born in USA. He is a man with great speed and technique, but Rob still has a lot to learn.
‘Dion Blaster’;Born in England. Dion is one big powerhouse and is easily the fastest of the five. But his cornering is a bit hard to handle.
‘Akari Hayami’; Born in Japan. What she lacks in speed is made up with raw talent for the sport.
‘Ricky Winterborn’; Born in Canada. If you wanna perform some out of this world stunts then Ricky is your man, he literally flies off the jumps.
When you’ve chosen your racer then you’ve got to select a board. There are many boards to choose from, one of these is the ‘Scout 156’.
Believe me when I say this is truly one amazing game, which is not to be mist.
My second game is ‘WWF Warzone’
Warzone is with out a doubt the greatest wrestling game of its time. It was really the break through for wrestling games taking the programme to unknown territory.
In its day this game had some of the best wrestling visuals ever known.
The create-a-character was what everyone was talking about. People spent just as much time on the create-a-wrestler as they did wrestling. The number of different options you could mess about with was staggering- you could altar clothing bit-by-bit, from shoes to gloves, and there are sliders to give an infinite variety of colour choices. You could even give your character a personality (good or bad guy). A theme tune could be added to give it more of a realistic feel. As well as a set of moves of your choice. It was by far the most detailed creator the world had ever seen.
There are more game modes than you’d care to remember. Warzone’s got plenty to be getting on with, including some great multiplayer options for up to four grappling combatants. You can fight in a standard ring, a metal cage or even with a selection of weapons including chairs, televisions and even ring side bells.
There is also a royal rumble option where you fight every wrestler in the game four at a time. And you have to be the last in the ring in order to win. If you lose (have your poor defenceless body thrown over the top ropes to the mat outside) then you are reincarnated as a different wrestler.
You can select tag teams, one off matches or challenge for the belt.
There is even a training mode where you can learn all those tricky holds and throws.
The different matches are, Challenge; pick your favourite wrestler and tussle with the best guys from the wwf to see who will win the gold.
Versus; the ideal bout to master each fighter’s special moves. Choose your opponent, wait for the bell then get stuck in with a ‘body slam’ or two.
Tag team; jump in the ring and take on a couple of nutters. Tag your mate in and get stuck in with all the action.
Cage; Your locked in a huge cage until one of you manages to climb over and out. You can even get on the top and jump off on top of your unsuspecting victim.
Weapons; It’s just like being in the playground except you can pick up televisions (what a waste), huge chunks of wood and chairs to crash down on your poor defenceless opponent.
Royal rumble; all you gotta do is throw each of your opponents out the ring. Keep going until you are the only one left.
Gauntlet; try to beat six random wrestlers from the wwf, but there is one problem, your power meter isn’t restored after defeating each wrestler.
My third game is ‘Turok 2 Seeds of evil’
Sometimes just sometimes developers must even amaze themselves. And, playing Turok 2, you have to really wonder whether ‘Iguana’ really believed this follow-up could ever have been as good as it is. Frankly, it’s astonishing: bigger, darker, scarier, more violent, better looking, the list goes on. Indeed the leap between this and the first ‘Turok’ really is a huge one. For starters the dark fog has been cut back to a fine mist hanging heavily around the levels. Producing an air of expectancy, nervousness and tension.
The Plot.
Having saved the earth by defeating the Campaigner, Turok (Joshua Fireseed) has to embark on another mission. But this time, it’s all his fault. By throwing the Chronosceptor into a volcano he woke an even more veracious beast, The Primagen. The only way to stop the monster escaping is to defend the Lost Worlds’ seven energy poles, locate the keys, which allow him to enter the prison and defeat the Primagen.
If you thought that the monsters in the first Turok then wait till you see this little lot of beasties.
For starters they are far more intelligent, and they even retreat or hide behind objects if they’re in any serious threat. One of the most frightening aspects to them is that they seem appear from now where, and if your not paying attention you may literally jump out of your skin.
Raptoids; These devils spend their time picking over their victims. Fast and lively, but too weak to cause any real problems.
Fireborn; The first enemy you will face. He’ll charge at you, but really knows when to back off, especially when the going gets tough.
Raptors; The only dinosaur in the whole game. Raptors are incredibly fast and can use their claws to rip you to shreads.
Juggernaughts; One of the toughest enemies. His huge size protects him, and he can use his sword to great effect.
Hulk; This beastly monster is one hell of a tough cookie. He can take loads of firepower and can even throw bomb like grenades.
Mites; These little critters spring out of the large pods dotted around the hive of the Mantids. They aren’t really very strong but are small and so tricky to kill.
Endtrails; Is an incredibly nasty piece of work. He’ll keep coming until he wastes you. So it’s best to take them down from a distance.
Gunners; Tuck themselves away and fire from a long range. They are very good shooters, but if their guns jam then make your move.
Swamp Wasps; Only attack if you walk near their nest. Very tricky to kill as they’re always buzzing around the place.
Soldiers; These hunchbacked goons have four arms, each equipped with laser cannons. Strafe and shoot.
Workers; The workers are a nightmare to kill. They appear out of nowhere and they’re always on the move.
There is a whole selection of weapons and here is a quick taster.
Talon; Your default under water tool, dealing with water lingering monsters, after a few good swipes you’ll have opponents left to breed on the water bed. But as soon as you find a better weapon you’ll straight away get rid if the Talons gladly.
War blade; This two-pronged giver-of-death will bag you a raptor with a good few strikes.
Bow; Hitting a monster with an arrow does no good, it just sticks there until you hit them square in the head to kill them dead.
Pistol; An excellent weapon, the first so far to inflict bullet wounds, that will give you confidence and it comes with a dazzling array of bright crimson fireworks.
Magnum; With a magnum you can really watch the blood fly, rather slow to reload but a powerful weapon that will kill a raptor with a couple of good shots.
Charge dart rifle; This gunfire electrical charges to stun your enemies and while they are shaking you are free to kill.
Shotgun; A real power house weapon that can take a head clean off in one shot.
Plasma rifle; Shoots green plasma, for long range shooting but not for close up.
Firestorm cannon; Great fun with a rotating barrel, which locks into place. Fires red death lazer rays.
Grenade launcher; One devastating piece of weaponry. If you hit a monster with this thing he’ll be taking short flying lessons, and the chances are they’ll fail crash landing smack into a wall.
Scorpion launcher; A sort of bazooka/rocket launcher weapon which fires three rockets out to cause one thing and that’s devastation.
Turok 2 is one amazing game, which is bound to impress. Its multiplay option is great fun to relieve anger by blowing your best mate to bits with a Scorpion launcher.
My fourth game is the mighty ‘Perfect Dark’
Perfect dark is nothing short of a masterpiece. It truly is a game that’ll make your eyes pop out in utter disbelief. The plot with friendly aliens and evil alien dinosaur like creatures trying to take over the world is a bit farfetched even if it is in the future. Still the game has very few bad points and hundreds of positive points.
The most liked thing about the game is the endless list of options.
These include; Carrington Institute (which include training), Solo missions, Co-operative, Counter-operative, Combat Simulator (which includes the challenges).
Inside the Carrington Institute there are so many things to keep you occupied like the combat training where you can select a type of combat to practice at like hand to hand combat. There is also the option to go to the target practice, where you can select a weapon of your choice and try to beat the challenges like hit 8 bulls eyes in 9 shots, in 10 seconds.
There is even a gadget tester where you get to learn about each gadget and how the work.
The solo mission is great fun to do although I prefer the co-operative because you’re playing with someone working together as a team. But there are a lot of missions to keep you occupied for a good length of time.
The good thing is that they are all carefully planned and are very good fun to do. During the missions you will need to show many different skills such as stealth for example.
The co-operative again is a brilliant idea so you can do the solo missions with a trusty friend by your side to help you out. Many times I find myself thinking I’m in the game fighting for my life blasting monsters away with hi-tech futuristic weapons.
The counter-operative is a real original and is a big hit. Basically what happens is, one of you is Joanna trying to complete the solo missions, but your friend is playing as the bad guys trying to help stop Joanna Dark from completing the levels.
The combat simulator is the best in the world, I’ve never seen anything like it, all it’s missing is a level editor to create your own levels, but apart from that this is amazing.
The challenges are simply a stroke of genius, they begin so very simple and easy and then gradually getting harder until it is nearly impossible. Basically they are something that you can do alone or with some mates and they are just little missions against enemy simulants.
There are so many different things to choose from, like the weapon choice where you can choose your own favourite weapons to fight with. You can add simulants to fight with or against you. You can select your favourite level to fight on.
For me it is the combat simulator, which got Perfect Dark the credit it did, sure the solo missions are fun and exiting but the combat simulator is just indescribable. You can even create a character and have all you stats recorded, and these stats are no ordinary stats these stats go into amazing detail even telling you your accuracy, and head shots. The better your character does the higher rankings they’ll get.
Perfect Dark is a game that if you haven’t experienced already then you must do so very soon indeed.
My fifth game is ‘WWF No Mercy’
Wrestling really is my thing and No Mercy is just what I need to keep me sain. The create a character is truly amazing with literally thousands of options to change and build up about your character. The moves are amazing, when your choosing your characters’ moves you can preview them to have a look at each manoeuvre in full detail by swivelling the camera round and the zooming in and out to get the perfect shot.
There is a championship to do with any of the hundreds of wrestlers on choice including any of your own. By doing the championship you will receive money in which you can take to the smackdown mall where you can buy more costumes, moves, weapons and even other wrestlers. There is a huge choice of matches including the much loved ladder matches where you have to beat your opponent in racing up a ladder in order to grab the belt hanging from high above. Outside the ring in each match there is a table in which you can put your opponent through with any move including jumping off the ladder onto them.
The hard-core weapon matches are amazing where you can go into the back rooms like the pub where you can use a snooker Que. to batter your opponent with then place him/her on the snooker table, jump on yourself and “Kick his candy a##!”. You can also go to the locker room where there is another table, and even a set of chairs, all of which can be picked up and used as weapons. Or maybe you want to go into the boiler room, there isn’t really anything here but still its good fun to fight in. Finally, you can go to the parking lot, again there isn’t much here accept for a big lorry that you can get in and jump off onto your unsuspecting victim.
The new option for more inventive double teams is brilliant, from your partner holding your opponent side ways in the air and you then jumping off the turnbuckle doing a leg drop on him all the way to the 3-D.
No Mercy contains all the new wrestlers that Wrestlemania didn’t such as ‘Taz’ the human wrecking machine, ‘The Dudley Boyz’ those damn Dudleys, ‘Rikishi Phatu’.
No mercy is a brilliant, it probably wouldn’t appeal to any one who dislikes wrestling but for those who do then this is definitely the game for you!
My final recommended game is ‘007, The world is not enough’.
The world is not enough, is made by ‘Rare’ (the makers of Perfect Dark) so there was a really high expectancy level for it, and for many it didn’t meet their expectancy level in that the multiplayer isn’t half as good as Perfect Dark’s. There are only up to four bots, you can’t select their difficulty and you can’t make your own character and keep the stats. Apart from those the game is superb, with amazing graphics and detailed and lovely smooth gameplay. The solo missions are absolutely brilliant and are great fun to do. I feel a co-operative option should have been made but still it is all very good.
The weapons are great fun to fight with and all produce some great firepower. Secondary options are available for almost every gun, and just makes them that important bit better. There are loads of guns all the way from the classic PP7 pistol to the Sniper rifle with one breath-taking zoom.
The world is not enough contrasts some great agent skills such as stealth, big gunfights, long range sniper shots and so on.
The multiplayer is still very good though and is great fun, especially on king of the hill. The levels are great with some excellent surrounding scenery, which really adds a more realistic feeling to the whole thing. With places for every thing like, cover from shots, high sniping positions, cheeky roots to sneak up on people.
The world is not enough is a game that I would recommend to all, as it is simply a superb game.
