I am a fairly big Star Wars fan, and in the past I have bought several Star Wars games for PSX and N64. Titles such as Rebel Assault 2, Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi and Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, were (As a Star Wars fan) enjoyable, though as a gamer, they weren`t really the most amazing titles around, and many magazines and buyers agreed that the games were in fact spoiling the Star Wars image, and Lucas Arts` reputation.
Admittedly there were some titles (predominantly N64 versions) that were fairly successful. Games such as Rogue Squadron and Episode 1: Racer stayed a considerable length of time in the N64 sales charts, and personally I particularly enjoyed Rogue Squadron. However, as yet I do not believe that there has been any Star Wars game that is anywhere near as eagerly anticipated as the next Gran Turismo or Tekken, let alone the next Metal Gear Solid.

Well, there are a few Star Wars titles lined up for the PS2, but the main question is will they be any good on a next-generation console, or will they fall to the ground, flat on their faces in a similar style to many of the previous Star Wars outings? Below are some of the upcoming titles, and my opinion of how well they will do...

Star Wars: Super Bombad Racing.
This will be a Star Wars / Mario Kart mix up, and if it can keep good playability whilst looking like a next-gen game, it has the potential to do very well. However, looking at some of the movies and screen shots over at IGN.com, it already seems that it will be the kind of game that could have been released on the PSX, and not lost much in the graphics department. The movies I saw were all "fogged over", so that the up-coming scenery popped out of the background and suddenly became a part of the track, It was the kind of thing that if you bought GT3 and saw that, then you`d chuck your PS2 straight out of the window.
Anyway, as for the options, it will supposedly have standard racing modes, and a four player simultaneous play mode. There are rumours of time attack and secret modes that open up as you complete the game. There should be 25 different weapons and also nine tracks from the movie including the old favorite Tatooine and the swamp of Naboo (featured in the movie).
So it sounds as if it could be a successful Kart racer, but only if those graphics are sorted out. Obviously playability will have to be tested nearer the time.

Star Wars: Starfighter.
This title in my opinion, holds far more promise. Looking at the movies (again at IGN.com) there appeared to be a little room for improvement, but in the later movies this had been taken care of, and the graphics in the screen shots looked fairly amazing. This title will apparently be a more complex version of the successful Rogue Squadron. It will keep similar arcade space combat, which was found in RS, and combine it with the more "hands on" control system of X-wing on the PC.
What has to be the most amazing feature of the game is the huge environments that you can fly around in (supposedly 14 in all). Each one is said to lack pop-up, and allow that "freedom of movement" feel that is vital in a space combat game.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan.
This is a game that was sheduled for the PC, but could make a surprise switch to the PS2. Mr Lucas seems to have a large interest in the console, and Obi-Wan could be on the way. This could be a brilliant game, but we will have to wait for more details.

Will we see a Star Wars game that people talk about more than GT3? Perhaps there will be a good Star Wars title on the PS2. As yet, I do not know... Does anyone else?

THIS JUST IN: Obi-Wan has a 70% chance that it will come to PS2... is George Lucas going to reccomend it to LucasArts? He seems to enjoy the console he got for Xmas!... Wait for it... AWW!! You're going to have to wait until next month to find out!!

As for Super-Bombad Racing, it's been canceled for the Dreamcast. :):):)!!! More fun for us!

Next to Half Life, Dark Forces II was the BEST game I have ever played. It was released in '97, and I'm still playing deathmatches on it!

LucasArts seem to have a 50/50 success rate with Star Wars games... sometimes they do a fantastic job(X-Wing/Tie-Fighter/et al.) othertimes they REALLY screw up (Episode 1, force commander, etc)

The only way to garentee the PS2 will see a decent Star Wars game is to put it in the seat next to you next time you play Dark Forces (sorry, couldnt resist)

I am a BIGGG Star Wars fan!

Sorry to dissapoint oyu, but Rogue Squadron 2 is not a game. It was meerly a test of the Gamecube's graphics, and no such game will be released. Sorry!

Speaking of other games, Star Wars: Galaxies will make it's way onto PS2 when we have internet on-line play. Like Phantasy Star Online for the DC, you will be one of a cast of millions in the Star Wars galaxy, helping and fighting each other from around the globe!

I hope Obi-Wan will come out for PS2, and yes, George Lucas has a PS2. He enjoys it, too!

I like the sound of the gamecube follow up because (as you said) its set in the original trilogy, which will be more interesting than Starfighter which was much earlier.

Loved X-Wing, adored Tie Fighter, and devoted my life to X-Wing Alliance, one of the best games ever made.

I wonder which will be the better game?

On Gamecube: Rogue Squadron 2.

On PS2: Starfighter.

Obviously more is known about Starfighter, and the only thing we're pretty sure about Rogue Squadron is that it's set in the original trilogy...

I would love to play both mind... I doubt there is going to be much in them...

Sorry Grix, I meant a compromise between X-wing and Rogue Squadron. It certainly isn`t as complex as X-wing. Did you like X-wing? My brother as it, and he loves it. However, I never really got into it, because my brain was too small to handle all the controls.
