I'm thinking of switching to freeola 8Mb Max 360GB, just had a few questions!
Looking at a few ISP review sites I've seen a few people comment on traffic shaping, people seem to think that they get capped to 1-2Mb at offpeak times, is this true?!
What's the latency like? What sort of pings should I expect to see in Counter Strike Source, WoW etc.
Can you change the RDNS of your static IP's?
Thanks for your time!
Just spoken to a colleague who plays CS and he gets between 12 and 18ms pings on decent servers. Unfortunately the ping issue with WoW doesn't have much to do with your connection, players say it's the WoW servers that are the problem.
One thing that can affect latency is the use of interleaving on your ADSL line. Your router or modem should be able to give you some indication as to whether your connection is interleaved or in 'fast path' mode. Interleaving is typically used to make your connection more stable on a poor telephone line and as it's a form of error correction latency is increased. It is possible to ask BT to switch off interleaving if you have it enabled at the cost of sync speed and possibly connection stability, but your latency times should decrease.
That's exactly what I wanted to hear, I think I'll make the switch (if only Demon would hurry up with the mac code!).
I suppose the b/w throttling does make sense, better to have less bandwidth that works well, as for a 10-20 ping, that sounds amazing. Currently I'm only able to achieve 40-55 on most UK based CS source servers, and a lovely 150ms in WoW, although luckily I gave that up a few months ago after 2 years of playing and switched to WAR!
Cheers :)
I'll try and answer all your questions.
There is no strict capping done at any time. What is in operation is a system which, at very busy times (around 10pm and later), can reduce your throughput in steps down to 2Mbps. This occurs to maintain an even throughput for all users so that ping times don't suffer and time sensitive applications such as online gaming and VOIP can still be used. We do not throttle individual protocols in any way. The system is designed to reduce throughput only when needed and will automatically increase the allowed throughput when the available bandwidth increases (as users got to bed!). We are currently waiting for 2 new 'central pipes' to go live which will increase the available bandwidth to everyone significantly.
Difficult to say what you latency will be like but in general our users achieve very respectable ping times. My connection nearly always has a 10 - 20 ms ping time to major servers.
Yes you can ask our support people if you wish to change the rDNS of your static IP(s).
Hope that answers your questions satisfactorily.
