Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use the PS2 memory card to save ordinary PS games (when played on PS2).
I tried out Resident Evil 3 on my PS2 (funny how poor the graphics look in comparison to the next gen games isn't it?!). Anyway I went to save my progress, my PS2 memory card was inserted but I got the error saying that it wasn't.
Did this happen anyone else ?
Any ideas ?
PS1 cards are block-based - a save uses up one complete block (at least), regardless of whether or not it actually needs all of it. Each slot is around 8Kb, but a game save might only require 1Kb; even so, the block is used, and you lose the other 7Kb of storage capacity.
So if you have 15 1-block saves from that game, your memory card is deemed full, even though most of the physical capacity is left empty.
On PS2 cards, saves are made as files, not blocks - so they only take up the space they need, just like on a disk. If anything, you get far better value from the new cards; not only do they have a much larger storage capacity, but you don't waste any space. When your PS2 card is full, it really is full.
PS1 games are (obviously) designed to save data using the old block-based system, and so won't work with the new cards.
It's possible that someone could produce some kind of adapter to allow you to save PS1 games on PS2 cards, but I don't know if it would be worth their while financially, as PS1 cards aren't that expensive.
