As I was having breakfast in the Inter-Continental Hotel in London (long story...) I heard an American business-man saying to a friend of his saying

'This'll be the safest 48 hours for a long tim'

Thoughts?

Fair enough, but I still disagree.

1) the countdown to war is the ideal time for pre-emptive terrorist action

2) the Iraq skirmish will not last for "a long time"

3) disregarding the potential threat of terrorist attacks, the war itself will not be waged on either British nor American soil, and so we here will be perfectly safe for its duration.

He said 'This'll be the safest 48 hours for a long time'

i.e. Once the countdown is over, we will no longer be safe

Of course the american man may be a terrorist himself!

Maybe you should get on the phone to MI5, or 6, or whatever government agency it is ;)

well, I guess that depends where he is talking about. If he's thinking about the world in general he's being pretty narrow minded in the all he's aeeing is america and america's enemies.

If he's talking about Bagdad, or the Iraqi desert, then he's probably right. I hope the war is over quickly, but you'll notice that Bush has left a get out clause, saying he will attack at a time of his chosing, (or maybe never). I'm pretty sure it'll happen though.

If he's referring to terrorist attacks in the west, well, it's wartime gentlemen, and so gaurds should be up. September the eleventh (not that I'm linking it to the war on Iraq, but he may be linking Saddam to terrorism) was partially a result of complacency in the west, as was Bali. So during wartime I don't see that we should be under any greater threat to terrorist attack than any other time. If anything we should be more on guard, and so the likelihood of a successfull terrorist attack should be less.
