This was a brief discussion I was having last night in a semi-drunken haze so I can't remember all of the ones we came up with. I do remember that we were in agreement that there were very few (if any) occasions where we thought that the second film in a trilogy wasn't the best of the three, regardless of genre.

Star Wars? Empire Stikes Back was our fave...

Alien or Aliens? The more the merrier we say...

Beverly Hills Cop? Number 2 did it for us...

Our list went on (I think).

Even when you look at films with only one sequel it is usually the better of the two. Toy Story 2 and The Lost World both spring to mind.

I'm sure if we thought about it longer we could have proved ourselves wrong but out glasses were growing empty and the bar was calling us once again.....

Over to you guys!

I wasn't an argument I way trying to start, I just couldn't be bothered to prove myself wrong so I thought I'd let someone else have a go!

Of your selection:

Jaws - fair enough

Scream - I've only seen the first so I don't know

Halloween - a trilogy? I thought there we're two but I might be wrong - it's not really my genre.

2001 - er....?

Lethal Weapon - too many films made

Police Academy - far, far, FAR too many films made. Please God let them stop!

Obviously the first sequel isn't always the best of the three but I still stand by my thinking that it is true in most cases. Newer films seem to be breaking this rule as sequels are, as you said, quite commonly made just for the money.

Star Wars is now no longer a trilogy (although Empire is still the best). The Lord of the Rings is only a trilogy because it's too long for one film and the six books (yes, six, not three) are usually published in three volumes anyway. Having said that, The Two Towers (books three and four) was the one I enjoyed the most.

On a different note, I liked The Phantom Menace quite a lot, but I'd guess that's probably because I'm not much of a fan of the other films.

What about those trilogies yet to come, such as the Star Wars prequels? Surely episode 2 cannot fail to be superior to the Phantom Menace!

The Matrix? Will it's sequels be much cop?

And then of course there's the Lord of The Rings trilogy.

Hopefully they'll all be good!

It's strange, but I reckon your argument seems to be the exact opposite of what most other people think. I thought that the general concensus was that the original was always better than the sequel as most sequels are driven by the thought of more money. True, Empire was the best, but look at Jaws, Scream, Halloween, 2001, Lethal Weapon, Police Academy (OK, maybe not) but you get the general idea. haven't you seen Scream 2?
