I've recently had some quality recommendations regarding books and it is occured to me that there must be many, many more books worth reading that I don't know about. Best of all was the fact that the books were "sold" to me on simple premises; the main concept is given but nothing is given that could spoil the experience. Akin to watching Dusk to Dawn for the first time without knowing the twist.

So my proposal is to start a thread in which people can recommend good books, without discussion or too much information being provided. Just whole hearted suggestions. I'm happy to take a chance on someone's opinion being valid.

So here are a couple to get you going:

Stephen King's: IT. His best work in my opinion.

Porno: The sequel to Trainspotting.

Man, that's got me thinking, I've been a lame reader recently...

Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. The first one is called Wizards First Rule and it will just drag you in a keep you there. One of the best books I've ever read.

Check out www.terrygoodkind.com for more info, but beware of spoilers on the site...

It's got to be Stephen Donaldson.

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant has 6 parts. The ones IB mentioned and a further 3 parts:

1. The Wounded Land
2. The One Tree
3. White Gold Wielder

Brilliant fantasy series with more than a hint of brooding darkness.

The GAP series is mesmerising. Dark doesn't even come close to it.

Now I discovered he's written a new set of mystery books but they're full of his characteristic repetoire:

1. The Man Who Killed His Brother
2. The Man Who Risked His Life
3. The Man Who Tries To Get Away
4. The Man Who Fought Alone

I'll be buying the first installment next week to see whether it's good or not, but if you're not a big fan of Sci-Fi or Fantasy, it's probably worth giving it a shot.

Yeah, I have to agree that IT was kings finest work.
Secondly (out of what I've read) I'd say the stand, which is a superb story. After that, probably the shining.

I bought 'the girl who loved tom gordon'(also by king) but was rather disappointed with it, perhaps one to avoid.

If you like sci-fi, I highly recommend anything from Phillip K Dick. The Minority Report book contains a collection of short stories (including the title story), which are quite mind bending. Also, 'a scanner darkly' is excellent.

I'll have to plug Stephen Donaldson again:

Dark Fantasy: The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever

Three parts - Lord Foul's Bane, The Illearth War, The Power that Preserves

Sci-Fi: The Gap series

Five parts - The Real Story, Forbidden Knowledge, A Dark and Hungry God Arises, Chaos and Order, This Day All Gods Die

I'd recommend reading the Covenant books first, as they were his first works and you can see how his deep and dark style has matured in the Gap series.

Excellent stuff.

If you like Fantasy then try Deep Secret - Diana Wynne Jones. Or Stardust by Neil Gaimen. Both excellent books.

Another good book which is slightly different is The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fford.
