MSN is the least functional of the instant messengers really. You might consider tryingICQ, file tranfering support is much better. More importantly for you, it supports resuming, so if the transfer stops you can start again where it left off.

Well running an FTP or WWW server is no big deal. Download GuildFTP (google for it), and use that. Simple. You may have to configure your router/gateway if you possess such a device however.

There's not a real way of accessing a random person's files with just their IP address. They have to be running an FTP/WWW server, have samba enabled, or similar services. Even then, you'll need an account.

You can actually set up an FTP on your own computer in which someone with your IP address and login details can access.

You are thinking of ftp. You log in to an ftp server using an ftp client, and all the files and folder they wish to share are displayed to you. You then download or upload what you want.

It gets a bit more complicated sometimes, but that's the nutshell of it.

You've lost me.
What are you trying to do???

FTP is a 'File Transfer Protocal', a method of sending files over the Internet, and used mostly to 'Upload' or 'Copy' your files to your own Web Site.
