Now that will create interesting politics. Do they release the man ultimately responsible for thousands of deaths, or do they try him and possibly cause the deaths of thousands more as a result? If they give in and release him, they're shown to be weak. If they stand firm, try and probably execute him, they could be held responsible by voters for any response.

So why pursue Bin Laden in the 1st place?

Well, for a start, Al Quaeda won't fall apart without a leader. They'll just have another take his place. Plus they're likely working in cells anyway, and will be tough to grind.

Heh, having captured Bin Laden raises a whole host of problems in itself.

You can imagine the Al Quaeda network demanding he be freed at the threat of further acts of terror.
