Fergie slams 'arrogant' Arsenal
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes Arsenal have become "over-confident" in recent weeks and feels that could be their undoing.
Ferguson is hoping his squad can bounce back from Sunday's Worthington Cup final defeat to Liverpool by beating another of their rivals, Leeds United, in the Premiership on Wednesday.
Although the Merseyside and Yorkshire clubs are considered to be United's fiercest adversaries, it is Arsenal who appear to their nemesis - so much so that Ferguson has returned to his old battle plan of mind games in a bid to maintain pressure on the leaders.
He has now accused Arsene Wenger's side of cockiness and has warned them that United will be ready to pounce if there is a stumble in their swagger.
"When you are over-confident, as Arsenal have been, football can come back and kick you. That's why we have to keep going," said Ferguson.
If United beat Leeds at Old Trafford, they will be five points behind the Gunners with both sides having nine games left. That will include United's trip to Highbury on 15 April.
"The situation is quite clear, we have to win games. There is no doubt about that or else Arsenal will be over the horizon," added Ferguson.
"But Arsenal have been confident. They talk confident and that's coming from all of them. Sometimes, though, that can come back and kick you in the teeth. Football is the greatest at doing that.
"We are capable of winning our remaining nine games. We are capable of winning any game and we have shown that time and time again, but the important thing is to win them and not just be capable of winning them.
"After Sunday, we now have to depend on players with real character. We have to progress and make sure we keep the pressure on Arsenal," he told the Manchester Evening News.

So Arsenal are cocky and over-confident? Pull the other one, Fergie - it's got bells on!
Anyone regularly watching the interviews with anyone officially connected with Arsenal will know just how much hot air an b******t the man is speaking. All anyone ever says is that there's a way to go, but that we are playing well and are capable of winning the title. No-one assumes we have won it already, and all they ever talk about is 'thinking only abuot the next game'.
Given recent results, I feel that if anyone is over-confident, it's Fergie. "United will be ready to pounce if there is a stumble in their swagger". Not if they have many more performances like Bolton and the cup final, they won't be!
The only people to have awarded Arsenal the Premiership crown already are the press. Though some fans might think it's already ours, I can guarantee that no-one inside the Marble Halls will be so convinced.
At the moment, if I were Fergie, I'd be more concerned about staying ahead of Newcastle. If United were to finish 3rd again...
Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill.
> Because stupidity annoys me! :-)
How do I live with myself?
(Thought I'd get in before anyone else...)
> Actually you are - his apparent comments have got to you otherwise why
> make anything of it?
Because stupidity annoys me! :-)
> Falling for it? Not at all - the clue is in the thread title!
Actually you are - his apparent comments have got to you otherwise why make anything of it?
Hence :
"Mind games or not, how he can accuse others of being arrogant when
he's one of the most arrogant people on the face of the planet is just
beyond me."
> My point was that he must be losing the plot. Everyone knows that
> Arsenal have never claimed to have already won the title,
Can I ask you to take some of your own advice?
- don't always listen to the media they have the abililty of twisting words!
My point was that he must be losing the plot. Everyone knows that Arsenal have never claimed to have already won the title, and that what he's saying is pure fantasy.
Mind games or not, how he can accuse others of being arrogant when he's one of the most arrogant people on the face of the planet is just beyond me.
Some quotes from today's media:
"We have never got into that here because the bragging game is a dangerous one. You can end up feeling quite sheepish."
Like when you booked a hotel for the FA Cup final a couple of seasons ago?
"All we need is for Arsenal to drop two or three points and we are right back in it."
Assuming that United don't lose any more silly games themselves.
"Everybody's biggest game of the season is playing Manchester United."
Once upon a time, maybe.
"And, of the local rivals we have, who are the better teams ... Liverpool and Leeds or Charlton and West Ham?"
Liverpool and Leeds aren't *exactly* local derbies, are they? Derby games are totally different. Man City, anyone? But still, on current form, are Liverpool and Leeds really much better than Charlton or West Ham? Well, okay, maybe West Ham... but look at the table and you'll see that Charlton are above both Liverpool and Leeds.
No, no-one's falling for it. It just surprises me how much hot air and b******t one man can come up with. If he spent half as much time getting United sorted as he does trying to rattle Arsenal, he might get somewhere.
It would take a far, far better man then Ferguson to upset Arsenal.
- lets just hope your manager and team doesn't..
(or does even)
:-)
