I hate cynical people, but I'm probably the most cynical person I know, quite strange really.

Was speaking to my little Italian friend in my uni class again today, and after most people passing their modules from semester 1 at uni without putting in any serious effort, again, it got me thinking about what actually constitutes an education these days??

This Italian guy I know is over here at uni so that he can get out of doing compulsary military service in Italy. That's just so cool, NATO goes to war with Iraq, and the guys who might be fighting are 18 year old Italians who are forced by law to "serve" their democratic leadership through the military. The same lovely democratic Italians will be sitting in their comfy leather sofas, deciding upon the fate of their people by taking the advice of a sheep, following another sheep, following another sheep who is following a Texan Bush which has it's roots firmly drenched in oil.

The wiff of stale oil is strong with this one, what is it? 50 years to go until fossil fuels run out? Hmmm, whilst America rejoice in owning about 80% of the UKs oil fields, and they really don't want the Iraqi oil, it belongs to the Iraqi people. How many bookmakers will give me odds on a new democratic Iraq being given "tied" aid which states that they can get as much help from America as they like, as long as the American oil imports stay cheap and cheerful. Meanwhile, back home in Texas, the stockpiling of America's own il continues, and the rest of the world suffers shortages as Amerca soaks up all the oil, and begins flogging it off an extortionate prices.

Then where do we go next? North Korea? Well, we need to get rid of everyone's nuclear weapons, except for our own of course, we're allowed them, because we're good, uncorrupted and holy right in our cause.

Now far be it for me to judge, but if the school bully has a pellet gun adn that's why everyone is scared of him, I would go out and get my hands on one too, and everyone would know that I could get my hands on it whenever I liked. The cool guy, wouldn't like it, he'd huff, and he'd puff, and then all his mates would give me a doing while he was off spending my lunch money, bet you didn't see that one coming did you?

How much of the North Korean problem has to do with the openly public supported opium fields in North Korea? How much longer will American politicians suck up to middle class citizens by telling them that their kids are smoking dope and snorting coke because the nasty little korean farmer is growing heroin for a bag of rice to feed his starving and famine ridden children?

When will the World's Police Force wise up and see that helping these people and setting an example will reduce terrorism, reduce hatred, reduce crime and reduce their own problems at home?

Once again America is cited as the root of all evil...*yawn* This kind of thing works if its funny, but otherwise I think even those who'd agree with you have heard it all before, and probably said it too. I haven't actually heard of North Korean farmers being blamed for growing drugs either, though if anyone can provide a reference I'll be happy to look at it, even if it were true the reasons why anyone is growing it is because the demand is there, not just in America, but in virtually every western country you can care to name, and before someone mentions legalisation, the UN chewed out a variety of countries who are suggesting legalisation of any drugs, including the UK;

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/2799847.stm

They all stand accused of "undermining the fight against global drug trafficking."

The International Narcotics Control Board President is quoted as saying, in relation to the accused countries; ""Governments should not be intimidated by a vocal minority that wants to legalise illicit drug use." and another is quoted as saying policies; "amounted to the authorities "giving up" in their fight against drugs"

Nice to know the UN isn't completely screwed in the collective head....

Thats from 1999, and it's relying on acurate copying from the source, best I could find was from 1998 ;
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/57951.stm and thats not citing a senator going off about it. Given that it's in many country's interest to rake up stuff like this about N.Korea there is very little about it on the net, a search on google with the keywords " Drugs Senator North Korea " didn't reveal anything either.

your not going to find it under drugs. There was a TV documentary on the Discovery channel about it last year, where they sent under cover reporters over the border and tried to get access to a poppy plantaion, that's their cover as "normal" farmers.

Theese farmers are subsidiesed by the government who then buy the untreated opium from the farmers and refine it in specialised plants.

The USA know about this and have survielance pictures from the most widespread areas. I can't give exact reference because I can't exactly remember what show it was on, but it is out there, somewhere :D

Meh. Heard that a million times. Almost an American cliche.

Life doesn't suck. Every single person who has replied saying it does, misses one big point, or many actually. You are at home, or work, or college or wherever, sitting in front of a monitor, complaining about how bad life is because of various things hundreds of miles away. Earlier in the day you had dinner, or breakfast, or tea, and after you'd done typing, eventually you go home, or to bed, in a safe home, knowing with all probability that you will be able to do whatever you want the next day, within reason of course.

Whilst you've been doing this thousands of people have died around the world, many from things that we treat ourselves to a day off work or education for. Millions more went to sleep on the streets, or in makeshift camps, not forgetting the other thousands, if not more, children, some who will be the same age as some of you, working as child labour in factories, farming, military, prostitution, and all the rest.

So, is it really that bad ? Nope. Get some perspective.
