EEEEEEAAAAGGGGLLLEEEEESSSS!!!!
It is possible that they may compete for the major honours in 3 or 4 years but I reckon much will depend on the availability of Steven Gerrard. He is a smashing player but misses far too many games through injury.
When you have such a KEY midfielder you need him to be a mainstay and play in 90% of matches throughout a season. If your top midfielder misses 30% or more of the season then the consistency goes with it.
That is the problem when you have a player or a couple of players of such quality that it is impossible to replace them in the team. Arsenal have suffered the same problem in recent seasons with Vierra and Adams both missing 30% or more of the season. Players of this quality have such a huge influence on the rest of the team that and it has a major detrimental affect when they are missing.
According to the press today he is claiming that Liverpool are closing the class gap on United and has predicted that United dominance could be coming to an end.
Liverpool do have a decent squad and on their day they are a match for anyone. However, they have been inconsistent in recent seasons - and they have won next to nothing. In my view they have a long way to go before they can even claim to be the second best team in the league. Arsenals acheivements over the last 10 years puts them well ahead of Liverpool. In fact, over the last 10 years Liverpool are well behind Chelsea in their acheivements.
You can only gauge this type of thing in terms of acheivements in recent years (ie, 5-10 years), not 5-10 games. Liverpools record over the last 10 years is pathetic (just one league cup and the occasional qualification for Europe).
Wake up Houlier - your'e dreaming pal !!!.
