Now, I make purchasing decisions based on what the product on offer is capable of, what value is represented by this product, and in the case of a games console - what special features it has, and how good/bad the games are for it.
However there is one crucial ingredient, that will, at the end of the day (before 5pm or the shops will be closed) sway my money spending decisions, at that is how good the product looks. It's all about aesthetics, and I believe sony hit the jackpot wit the redesigned Playstation - the PSone. It's small, light, compact, ergonomically sound, and will make people saw 'aw - it's so cute'. The packaging is also superb - the new PS logo - the control pad buttons, and so people were obviously going to chose this console at Christmas!
I have a Dreamcast, a PC and a game boy (not colour) and they all look as though they were designed by robots - sharp edges, horrible, horrible colours and yet they are all superb. But the PS is superb also, so couple this with the facts that it has the most amount of games in the world available for it, and that it looks so 'sweet' and tiny, and you've got a winner!
So, how can we expect the future consoles to look like? Well, Sony obviously forgot the importance of aesthetics, the PS2 is almost as intrusive as my 1970's radiator (yes I have one - a radiator - not a PS2), and the N64 and Playstation looked like machines made by evil pixies! I just think Apple macintosh should design everything as the Imac is just so 'yeah' - smooth, stylish and somewhat and oh so designer lable!
Looking back at the Xbox pictures all I can see is a Box - unlike the ugly Sega Saturn, or the Cassete deck inspired Panasonic 3DO.
It's ugly, the future is ugly, so maybe we'll all have to wear special glasses or something when we buy one.
Oh well!
How was that, Mr Gates? You know you could have gotten someone else much cheaper. Hey is this thing still on?
Oh shi-
[Sultry young model saunters into a bar and sits down next to an X-Box who is propping up the bar.
"Buy me a drink?" she asks the X-Box.
"Sure!" The X-Box takes out its wallet and buys her a rum and coke.
"So, fella.....what's a handsome box like you doing in a dive like this?"
"I find the people here very friendly" replies the X-Box.
"$$hrrjs kjjwe__*ejkh ssss###" says the sultry model.
***Microsoft technicians rush into view from off camera and hurriedly whisk away the sultry model.
Agitated voice in the background yells "CUT!!!". Screen goes blank.***]
(Apparently they are still working on her.)

> where is the christmas advertising
(for Dreamcast if I read this correct)
It's at Arsenal - seriously
(just to clarify previous)
Those shirts costabomba
Is it Arsenal? or another big club?
According to new statitics released by PC Data, over the Christmas season in the US the N64 managed to outsell the Dreamcast although Sony mantained their strangle hold on the market.
According to the figures, Nintendo's ageing N64 took 21.5% of the festive market (which translated into 181,000 units) whilst the Dreamcast limped in with 21.4% of the market share (181,000 units). As you can imagine, the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 took the lion's share of the market place.
Yep - they're so clever aren't they!
So there is obviously only 1000 units in it either way, and the N64 is actually being given away in the US...
On the other foot, the DC isn't good at all and will surely fail, so does anyone want to buy mine as i have absolutely no faith in a company who deons't risk anything - where is the christmas advertising, and doesn't actually seem to give a damn about any of its customers..
Xbox - you're ugly. You're chunky, but you'll do for me!
After all, consoles are not machines are they, so they shouldn't look like them.
