I don't get it.

I've just tried updating my 'Counter Strike' with the built-in online update, and was told I couldn't, because my Internet connection is invalid.

It recommended I look at my settings.

I've never had this sort of warning before, and don't quite know how my connection is invalid.

Does anyone know what might be the problem?

Thanks

You may be when he takes control of your machine, and uses it to perform a DoS on a target somewhere else on the internet, bringing your connection to its knees and possibly getting you in trouble with your ISP?

Or maybe someone will create an ftp server on your connection and upload child porn to it?

Hackers these days don't target individual machines, they have their tools scan entire ranges of ip addresses looking for open, interesting or easy targets. The point about installing firewalls and the like is to make your computer look as uninteresting and closed as possible, so the hacker moves on.

If you have a straightforward ADSL connection, with no proxy, nat, firewall or virus scanning software interfering then I have no idea what your problem is, other than you are leaving your connection wide open for exploit attacks :O)

Nope, nothing fancy. Just a single computer connected to a phoneline.

Do you have a LAN with a proxy server or a NAT server?

Couldn't you try updating just normally, by downloading the latest version from blueyonder or somewhere?

Any version to 1.5:
http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk /blueyondergames /halflife /modifications /counterstrike /patches /win32 /csv15full.exe

1.4 to 1.5:
http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk /blueyondergames /halflife /modifications /counterstrike /patches /win32 /csv1415.exe

Remove the spaces in between the directories and sub directories obviously :)

If that doesn't work you could always try the official CS forums (even if they are full of morons err, forget I said that :) )

I'll take a look at that site.

I don't have a firewall installed at the moment on my side ... and wouldn't of though they wouldn't let their software designed for updating get to their servers.

Strange.

isn't there a forum on counter-strike.net - might be better posting on there? if not is it a firewall/security issue ?
