The limit for USB leads is about 5 metres, before serious signal problems or it stops working at all. I can vouch for this, as we've tried it at work, testing different cables and different peripherals, and all experience some serious problems over distance - hence only having USB cables up to 5m..
Can't you move one or other of the devices?
