Mulholland Drive was beautiful to watch but made me nervous.
And horny.
And the expresso-dude still haunts me.
First thing to remember is that this is a disjointed film due to the way it was shot. Things like the monster behind the coffee shop and the cleaners murder were shot for the TV pilot with the intnetion they'd be expanded on later. In the film version these segments for some reason remain, but are of very little relevance to the rest of the film.
The first chunk of the film is Betty's dream. In real life (after Club Silencio) she is a struggling actress, in her dream she is a young, beautiful actress who can turn her exceptional acting ability on and off at a whim. See the audition - taken at face value it isn't really believable, as her dream it makes sence. Then there is the huge web of threats and underhand deals (see the coffee spitting guy, the bit where Adam has to go up to the cowboy ranch thing). Betty dreams that there is a huge conspiracy to keep her down and make Rita/Camilla famous. Then there is Camilla herself - Betty spurned lover. She dream Rita is dependent on her and needs her in their idylic little life (the over joyed "I'm going to make some sandwiches!" comment and the OTT relationship between Betty and the couple on the plain - these things don't happen in real life!). All these characters are picked from the party after we turn to real life and dropped into her dream. Think of the bizarre way Rita arrives - it's all just conviently set up for her like in a real dream. What you want to happen just does without any really logical reason.
We turn back to real life when she gets everything she want. She proves herself as an actress and gets Betty/Camilla so there is no more purpose to her dream. Plus, the serach for Diane has gone to far - Betty can't search anymore without being confronted with the truth i.e. that she is Diane and none of her dream has been true.
Have you ever had a dream where you lift maybe someone you see everyday on the train and imagine what their life is like and how they are connected to you? You put someone you know nothing about and put them into a role in your dream, exactly like Betty/Diane does. She picks people from the party and casts them into this organised syndicate to control Hollywood at her expense.
I haven't watched the film for a few months, so I've maybe left out some bits and bobs, but that's the gist of it.
Fast Eddie is a gangster, he makes snuff/porno movies.
Bill Pullman sought refuge in his subconcious from the murders and everyone has sex, except for the scary bloke at the party.
There.
Ah hell I dont know but there's shagging.
