In case you missed it, on Wednesday 5th February Colin Powell goes before the UN with new evidence that, it is claimed, will prove the USA/UK alliance case against Saddam.

This is "supposed" to be the real damning stuff. Not vague reports, files e.t.c, but real imagery and intercepted communications.

Over the weekend on Fox, CNN, and in Time and Newsweek, one quote has popped up everywhere from an - as usual- unnamed official;

"Hold on to your hat. We've got it."

The information is supposed to come from the NSA, and such a release of information is unprecedented because it will reveal some of the agency's capability.

Key parts of it are intercepted communications between Iraqi officials saying about the movement and concealment of material, personnel and facilities, and the Iraqi's boasting about it afterwards to each other. This will be alongside imagery showing before inspections and after inspections shots of locations proving the movement and concealment of material e.t.c

Hopefully, this evidence will be as damning as it sounds to be. I feel this is essentially the last shot - the evidence needs to be made public now, not in 100 years time. This is a great chance for America and its allies to prove wrong all those who have criticised them and said Iraq was innocent of this. Beas skeptical as you want, but I honestly believe this is the real deal this time.

That's what is making me scratch my traitor pinko head.

Bush "He's got WOMD"
The World "Er...since when?"
Bush "Since the last time he didnt use them for anything"
The World "He has never used them? What's the problem?"
Bush "He might do"
France "Hahaha, we blow up Mururoa Atoll"
Bush "Saddam has WOMD. That he's never used on anybody, despite being warred on by us"
The World "Send in the UN Inspectors"
Bush "Grrr Grrr Grrr"
UN Inspectors "We found nothing."
Bush "He's lying. I know he is."
The World "They found nothing"
Bush "The report has holes in"
The World "Maybe, but they found nothing. That he never used anyway"
Bush "But he may use them"
North Korea "We have them and we'll nuke you if you impose sanctions"
Blair "There are no link to Al-Queda and Saddam Hussein, I have just stated that to a committee"
Bush "We've found links to Al-Queda"
Blair "Oh for f..."
The World "This is not right"
Bush "Look at this evidence we just found behind the spy-sofa"
The World "Why didnt you give that to the UN Inspectors then? It would have consolidated your arguments and helped quell rising global unease at this situation"
UN Inspectors "Yeah, what's up with that?"
Bush "He has WOMD. And he has a moustache. We must stop him"
Pakistan and India "We've got them as well, and we're much more militant than Iraq. Plus we never used to be your friends, installed to prevent a hardline muslim leader in an Emirate state that may prove useful"
Bush "....WOMD..."
The World "Something smells funny"

Have I missed anything here?

The fact is, no matter how convincing this evidence is, huge swathes of people simply don't trust their governments to be straight with them any more. And after X years of being misled and deceived with watered-down versions of truth, half-truths, statistics taken out of context, and outright lies, should anyone be surprised at this?

Plus, as Goatboy says, why didn't they share at least some of this with Weapons Inspectors? If they found the smoking gun rather than the NSA/CIA/whomever is flavour of the month with Dubya and least likely to contradict him, it would look a lot better to those who are unconvinced as to why a war is necessary.

How do we know it wasn't faked by the NSA using hi-technology re-encryption coding, forgery and MS Paint in order to convince the Americans to go to war in order that the NSA can get kickbacks from weapons manufacturer profits so that they can continue to fund their black ops operations in Israel, South America and Wimbledon?

UN Weapons Inspectors "We found nothing. Some empties but that's about it and we poked around most places you can think of"

USA "We got the proof. Don't worry."

UN Weapons Inspectors "But we were there and found nothing. You found it how?"

USA "Satellites and spies"

UN Weapons Inspectors "So why didn't you share this info with us then? Surely that would have helped your case more, by providing us with your info and allowing us to locate these caches?"

USA "Shut up peaceniks"
