May 21 1998 - Sega unveil their next-generation console, Sega Dreamcast, in Tokyo, Japan.

November 27 1998 - Sega Dreamcast launches in Japan.

March 2 1999 - Sony unveil "The next-generation PlayStation" (PlayStation 2) technology to the press in Tokyo, Japan.

March 3 1999 - Nintendo stated "We are developing a more advanced videogame system, but we are not providing any specifics at this time". It was clear, however, that the specifics of the system - or at least some of them - would be made available soon.

March 1999 - Sony set a target release date for PlayStation 2 in Japan: "... within the fiscal year ending March 2000".

March 1999 - Sony set a target release date for PlayStation 2 in the US: "Fall 2000".

August 1999 - Sega delay UK Dreamcast launch by three weeks, Nintendo executives laughs.

September 1999 - Details arrive about Mobile 21, a company to be set up by Nintedo and Konami to develop games for next-generation consoles.

September 1999 - Dolphin likely to be delayed until 2001, due to game development only in planning stages.

October 1999 - Nintendo teamed up with S3 to embed their advanced texture compression technology right onto the Dolphin graphics chip.

January 2000 - Nintendo plans to ship 2 million Dolphin consoles worldwide by March 2001.

February 2000 - IBM complete two million copper chips for Dolphin

February 2000 - Publisher tells its developers that Dolphin will not be ready for 2000, but a Autumn 2001 release is likely.

February 2000 - Developers say that Nintendo will be charging large licensing fees for Dolphin development, making it almost as expensive as developing for cartridges.

March 2000 - Nintendo release a statment saying that the Dolphin has been delayed. A X-mas 2000 release date for Japan is possible, while the rest of the world will have to wait until early 2001.

August 2000 - At Spaceworld 2000, Nintendo finally reveal the official name of it's new console: "GameCube", along with it's tech specs, looks, controller and demos.

I know! Shocking isn't it? Dolphin was a working title for the system. simple as that.
