How?

Seeing as I start it in safe mode and it tells me I have to run scandisk to fix some errors..

But scandisk takes ages and keeps restarting for some reason...

I'm gonna leave scandisk on overnight to do a thorough scan...

Hopefully it will finish by tomorrow morning...

Why does it keep restarting though?

Hmmmm, it's in safe mode and the only program running is explorer!

I've also only got 3.5 gig left!

May have to delete a few things!

Scandisk is there, it's just hidden away on the drive properties window.

I left it on overnight to do a thorough scan, it kept restarting but I turned off that warning thing...

I then defragged at 8am this morning which took until 1:30pm!

I know what defragging is, its posh name is 're-hashing'...

Scandisk is not defragmenting. Your hard disk is like your bedroom - no matter how hard your PC tries, it eventually dissolves into an unruly mess, making it difficult to find stuff etc. Defragmenting is the process of the hard disk cleaning its bedroom.

Scandisk is when there's a problem on your drive that needs fixing. If it's taking hours and hours to do it then that is a very bad sign, and don't be suprised if your hard disk is an unsalvagable mess, if it ever finishes. If you can, boot off a different drive, and try examining/repairing this drive from there.

I had a similar problem to this, I ran scandisk overnight, it took for ever, only finished when I woke up in the morning but the most important thing is that it worked - you have some errors on your HD and scandisk will resolve them once run in safe mode, if you want to stop scandisk from running for any given reason just hit the Escape button and it will end scandisk. You can then de-frag your HD if need be.

You are right by starting again in safe mode but you are best off turning any power-saving settings, your monitor and your screensaver as well so scandisk isn't interupted. That's all the advice I can give you, sorry...
