But it's not like it's th efirst time an FA cup tie has been switched to a bigger teams ground, is it?
I don't know what the problem is.
Anyway, regarding the Worthington Cup, Liverpool haven't really played a decent side to get there, whereas Man Utd have needed the games to give paleyers returning from injury, and in poor form a run out.
In the first round we played in, against Leicester, we had had a few poor results, so some of the 'better; players were stuck in, and we got through, then we had a relatively local tie, and came through that, then it was Chelsea. If you play Chelsea, you want to put out your best...
Man Utd have simply had the fixtures at the right time, and in my opinion it's great to see them in a final.
I just hope that both teams really go for it on the day, could be a great match.

Wrong. The FA did not initially choose or condone the switch:

(That article also explains why no neutral venue near to Farnborough could be used!)
Farnborough were the first to request a switch to Highbury, on safety grounds:

I agree. Had it been a top team we were playing, or even a league team, I would have said fair enough - it's the law of the game. But given the occasion and the spirit, and the fact that the players may never play in such a venue or such a game again, the ref could have given a yellow. It was nice to see Parlour trying to talk the ref out of it.

Yes, AFTER an almighty kick at him from the Farnborough player - twice, in fact. As they said on the show, though, neither made contact, so neither was booked.
> You misread what I wrote - I was talking about the idea of swapping it

Again - it was Farnborough's own idea, not Arsenal's or the FA's.

Explained in the story linked to above.
> How nice of Arsenal.
Indeed. I don't see many other teams donating to the lower clubs.

Farnborugh said they would be able to host the match but the FA felt they couldn't

Yeh but the sending off wasnt exactly fiesty was it? I would have thought some leniancy and thought by the ref should have gone into the decision a yellow card would have been adequate - we knew Arsenal would win this game with or without the sending off. If it like a two footed challenge or someting then I would have agreed. Have a look at the highlights - Jeffers swung his arm out but didn't even get a whisper from the referee, it was a 50/50 at first, yet he still felt to swing his arm out - so what happened to his sending off?
> Ah, so he sent him off before kick-off? That's a new tactic - one

You misread what I wrote - I was talking about the idea of swapping it to Highbury, the FA thought about switching it to another venue but in the end thought Highbury would be 'adquate'.

How nice of Arsenal.

Because it's still listed as a Farnborough home game, and if one team isn't capable of hosting a match, it's switched to the other team's ground. Those are the rules, and that's the way it's always been - well, for as long as I can remember, anyway. Not to mention the fact that Farnborough WANTED the game switched to Highbury. No special case was made of this tie, and EVERYONE concerned was more than happy with the switch - so quit whining!
> The ref then sends off one of their young players

Have you seen the highlights yet? I haven't, but I will later. But maybe the sending off was deserved? I'm not saying it was, obviously, but it could have been - the smaller teams aren't necessarily known for their finess in the tackle, are they? Are we now to make new rules for lower-division/non-league sides, so that they can keep all their players on the pitch regardless of what they do?
Or is it just another bitter pill to swallow, because it's Arsenal again?
> I have no qualms about the score because we knew Arsenal would win, yet
> the lower league side is given a disability even before the match has begun.
Ah, so he sent him off before kick-off? That's a new tactic - one which I'm sure Fergie will be adding to his list of requests to the FA as we speak; it should work well alongside "No penalties for opponents at Old Trafford" and "Injury time will be played until United score a winning goal"! :-)
I think you'll find that the player was sent off after 28 minutes, which can hardly be considered "before the match has begun".
This is from the Football365.com write-up:
"After Francis Jeffers also struck, the biggest day of Farnborough defender Christian Lee's career was ruined when referee Alan Wiley was left with no option but to send him off for a professional foul."
> Weldone you footballing bodies, thats how to encourage lower league
> football.
Overlooking, of course, the massive increase from gate receipts that Farnborough received, and the entire profits from programme sales which Arsenal gave them. And the experience of playing at one of footballs most famous stadiums. That can only be good for them, surely?
The tie is played at Highbury yet Arsenal wear their away kit and Farborough are 'allowed' to wear their home kit so it looks like a 'home' game for farnborugh - why wasn't a neutral gorunf selected for this tie may I ask? The ref then sends off one of their young players early on, writing off any chance they had to impress. I have no qualms about the score because we knew Arsenal would win, yet the lower league side is given a disability even before the match has begun.
Weldone you footballing bodies, thats how to encourage lower league football.
> FA Cup? You never know. After Farnborough slip a 1-0 nil victory over
> Arsenal, the whole competition will be up in the air...
Well, they got their 1...
OK, he did mess-up a few times when he tried to run with the ball like he used to be able to do, but his good vision for through-balls and neat-passes was still there, and he still had the will-to-win.
He's the same old player - just a little slower!
What did I tell ya? :)
Glad to see us through after I had doubts about us actually beating Blackburn, especially after Cole scored. I could see Andy doing that as soon as Barthez came off-his-line... As a former-team-mate, surely Wes Brown could've suspected something like that, or at least have put his leg up and in the way to try and deflect it??
Why-oh-why did we ever sell Andy Cole??
Yorke seem to be enjoying himself out-there though, even when his team looked completely out-of-the-picture.
And for once, van Nistelrooy earnt a penalty that he actually deserved!
Nice one, Ruud!
Beckham's was really nothing though. The ball got caught under his feet as Thompson shoved him lightly.
> Geez, you Mancs, always thinking about yourselfs...
Actually, there's no point starting another thread and clogging up the forum, therefore we are thinking about other's - if you scouser's thought logically maybe you'd get somewhere with your football ;)
might bring some respectability back to the league cup
Geez, you Mancs, always thinking about yourselfs...
