Nope, not a single solitary award. Chicago did well though eh? A film based on a musical. And we know how much we all love musicals.
Peter Jackson ignored totally.
Wouldn't have anything to do with it not being a Hollywood flick by any chance? Made by New Line and featuring only Vigo Mortensen, Liv Tyler and Sean Astin as the American actors.
Special Effects by WETA (New Zealand), directed by Jackson (New Zealand) and starring mostly Brits and Kiwis.
No sir, there's no politics involved here. How dare you! Shame though, because I've come to realise that the Lord of The Rings movies (except for ROTK) have fast become some of my favourites. They reinvent spectacle, attempt to tell a vast story that employs long-term, resonation themes of friendship, love, bravery, loyalty and passion.
But Chicago won 3 and some Virginia Woolf-based movie. Who? You mean you've never read her stuff?
The Oscars is by far the worst, last year positive discrimination in the lead acting categories was verging on painful.
Wouldn't go over the top though, Chiago and The Hours are good films. Though I haven't seen the film yet, I was pleased to see Jack Nicholson get recognised for About Schmidt (can't wait to see that, Nicholson was great in his last comic role, As Good As It Gets, and Payne's Election was outstanding). Even when you pick through the Oscars you usually find some worthy winners. Last years awards for Jim Broadbent and the guy who wrote Gosford Park show that they do get it right sometimes.
I've already seen that stupid thing on the news twice today... probably a third if I watch the news tonight.
" And the Golden Globes took place... "
Shutupshutupshutupshutup
Chicago... what a load of balls
Some stupid film with nicole Kidman... what a load of balls
Watched Lord of the Rings last night actually... good... I really like the scenery in new Zealand, might go there.
"I like FOTR more and more each time I watch it, and the same with Two Towers when it's released on DVD."
Ditto. I thought the first time I saw FOTR that it was a well plotted trip into the imagination... but that the characters were portrayed weakly.
And I may just stand by that. But the fact is, now, that I KNOW the characters, the films are excellent to watch.
Maybe because it took a while to settle in, or maybe because [as I suspect] the Two Towers developed the characters some more, which made me watch the first in a new light.
All in all:
LOTR firstly = cool, but dull
LOTR nowy = Much much better and excellent.
I'll take back about what I said about the characters being flat, but only by putting the two films so far together as a big massive filmy.

Beard.
;-)
But I admit to being swept up in the spectacle of the films. I like FOTR more and more each time I watch it, and the same with Two Towers when it's released on DVD.
I just think Peter Jackson deserves recognition at igniting cinema-goers imaginations again instead of "Big Explosion 4"
I hate American awards. I hope the BAFTAs shower LotR with those face things. Then they trot off to Oscarland and realise that some disability/musical has won, for no reason. And Ron sodding Howard has got another award.
In fact, I hate America.
> Add to that the fact that its no longer original really, is it?
didn't stop them giving titanic a load of oscars.
It does seem like these awards aren't given out solely on merit in 100% of the awards, and as goatboy said does smell slightly of hollywood politics.
Last year there was a lot of hype for it, and the second film is no better or worse than the first, but it just laked the sparkle of seeing the first (even though I'm a huge fan of the books).
Maybe thats why. We will see.
