Right most of you know the special observe page.
Sheepy came up with the idea then got bored so I took over, we have a site hosted on angelfire - bit crappy but it's free.

The pages must have adverts on them (there are ways to stop them, using .asp files for example, php might work too, not sure)

Anyway if you check out the site www.specialobserve.tk you will see the nasty adverts and frames which don't work too well. Anyone who wants to be added just mail stuff to the address on the site.

At the moment with uni and exams I just don't have the time to change, find out ways of changing it to make it better.

I know there are plenty of talented designers out there with more than enough skill to make it a bit better. I know it might not be possible to remove the adverts but it would be nice to make the site look better.

So anyone want to help out, offer advice, improvements, write code etc.
Only thing in return is you get your name on the site, all I can offer.

Thanks if you can and want to help.

PHP is a server side language, so you can't rely on it purly for your Web Site. The outcome is still an HTML document. If you don't know anything about PHP, best not to look into that just yet.

CSS, on the other hand, is somthing you should look into, as it's pretty cleaver stuff. http://www.w3schools.com/ for a starting guide.

JavaScript, I'd say yes, as it can add that little extra to a Web Site.

But add the code:

So people with old browsers or who turn javascript off will know it is present on your Web Site (Why do people turn JavaScript off anyway??? Is it because of thepop-up ad's?).

But where do I start?

Do I go for the option of using HTML and CSS or should I look at maybe trying to use something like php to do it?

Also should I be wanting to include javascript features in it..

What makes good site design and what should be avoided?

I was thinking about it there and I realised that the server side scripting wouldn't work. The adverts aren't a major problem at the moment, just with the frames in there it looks weird.

I suppose the other option is to get someone else who dosn't mind the upload costs etc to do all the uploading for the site.

Firstly I'll get rid of the frames.
Any suggestions as to what can be done to make it look better?

Best thing to do there is like phi11i[ said, use of of Freeola's Addresses, which comes free with the Web Space, so you could have http://specialobserve.freeola.com or something like that, as well as having your current .tk address point to it.

PHP and ASP are server side scripting languages, which means they execute their code before the final page is sent out. The page is sent out as eny other HTML Page, so trying to use PHP or ASP to get around it wouldn't work :(.

They use JavaScript I would have thought to display the Adverts, but they would have some sort of Server Side code to insert such JavaScript code into your Web Page when it is sent to the users browser.

Not wanting to use another dial-up is fare enough, but for the cost, and what you get, I'd say it would be worth it.

In fact, if you did go for Freeola Space, try asking in the SR Forum. You never know, they may supply you with www.specialobserve.co.uk, if you asked them really nicely. No harm in asking :)

Just get a free Freeola1000 account...

It will cost you about 20p at weekends to upload if you're on their for ages...

That's 20 mins uploading and that's still a lot!

I am using broadband, don't want to have to use another line to upload at an extra cost.
Only thing that puts me of using something like freeola. Also the cost of buying the domail just for this site. Not really worth it that much is it?

I think after my exams I will resort going back to the single page layout and from there try and improve the look. The frames look ok on some displays but I think that getting rid of them could be the way to go.

As far as I know they only seem to embedd the code for the adverts in .html files, just wondering if it does use JS to embedd it in all the files.

Thanks for having a look. Will have a go some time during the week at making it look a little more pleasing on the eye.
