That's what someone told me when I was building this PC and wanted to get 1GB of RAM. Now my 512MB RAM just ain't enough for all the RAM hungry graphics software that I use.

So here are my questions:

1) How do I find out what RAM I can use.

2) How much RAM and in what quantities should I get it. I'll have to check later but I think I have one 512MB ram stick thingy. Should I just get another 1GB or maybe 2GB and replace the RAM I have? Or should I take into account the age of my motherboard as it might not handle that much?

Thanks in advance for your help Geek Squad!

1. Garin may be right in considering the cost of upgrading when balanced against the cost of a newer machine.

2. Keeping the original 'ram' may be the problem to an upgrade. The RAM speed must be matched; if the new ram is of a faster speed, then it will only run at the speed of the original one still left in place.

3. If you have four slots, then RAM must be replaced as 'paired' modules ie the same size and speed. That is Slot 1 & 3 the same, and Slot 2 & 4 the same - if you are splitting the RAM size. You are also right with WinXP 32 bit, it will only recognise 3GB - so 4 X 1GB RAM would be a waste.

4. Doesn't Crucial scan have an option for you to enter the scan requirements, like motherboard, manually?

When I needed more RAM I checked with the motherboard manufacturer's website to see what was tried and tested successfully.

But that depends on knowing which motherboard you've got...

Then I'd give some thought as to when the "near future" is. Given your processor, I'd guess any further upgrade is going to require replacing the ram again. So maybe its not worth upgrading.

Yeah I think because I'm using Windows XP (32bit) I can only use up to 3 or 3.5GB. So 2GB and my 512MB should be more than enough.

I'm glad to hear that because I'd rather get an external HDD because I plan to replace this PC in the near future. I just thought that external HDD were still very expensive. 500GB would be great, more than enough to handle all the huge files I'll be working with.

Cheers pb :D Now I feel like upgrading my keyboard, mousemat and finally getting a new printer. (printer ink is the real black gold because it's probably 50 times more expensive than oil)

As long as your motherboard can take it, go with 2x 1GB and that should be fine.

As for Hard Drives, get an external one. The internal one can be split and used for Windows (20-40GB) and a partition for program installs. The external can be used for media.

A 500GB external drive will only set you back between £50-70 nowdays, maybe even cheaper in a sale. Amazon has a fair few for £50. If you can afford it then even the 1TB drives have come down.

An external drive means less hassle when you finally change computer as well as being portable if you ever need to move it to a different computer to copy or move files.

Ah thanks a lot Dragonlance :)

It says it can't find a manufacture name or model number, I guess that's because it's a Machie made product ^^

Okay I have 4 slots, 1 with 512MB my options are another 512MB, 3 x 1GB, or get rid of the 512MB and have 4 x 1GB.

Hmm can I go with a 4th option and have 2 x 1GB instead?

While I'm upgrading my RAM, maybe I should finally install a second HDD. I only have 120GB (115GB actual) and I swear I've deleted 5 terabytes of stuff over the years because of it. What website do I go to, to scan for that? And what is the safe size everyone goes for now? 200GB? 250GB? 300GB? Oh and wheres the best place to go and buy it?

I need these upgrades because I'm using programs like Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, Flash, 3DS Max & Manga studio. Hopefully my P4 2.4 CPU still has a little life left in it before I replace it.

Hi Machie, one sure fire way to discover the amount and quantity of ram in your system and at the same time get a recommendation, if you have internet access from this machine, is to get a scan from Crucial
