So here are my questions:
1) How do I find out what RAM I can use.
2) How much RAM and in what quantities should I get it. I'll have to check later but I think I have one 512MB ram stick thingy. Should I just get another 1GB or maybe 2GB and replace the RAM I have? Or should I take into account the age of my motherboard as it might not handle that much?
Thanks in advance for your help Geek Squad!

And so was I as soon as I had posted it:)

I had the exact same thought the first time I encountered one :D
Thanks for your help Dragonlance and Garin :)
Is there any tests I can run to check the performance before and after adding in the 512? I'll just do a quick google first. Okay I found something, PassMark Performance, looks interesting but just a trial software. I've just run a test and got all these results that mean absolutely nothing to me. So I'll save it and run it again after installing the 512.

Without knowing all the components involved its difficult to say for certain. Its possible if the ram has different native speeds and timings that putting the 512mb will makes things unstable.
So I'd go with just your 2gig for a while. Make your sure its stable and you're familiar with how it runs, then add the 512mb and see what happens. Whether you'll feel any benefit depends on how you use your system and how its configured.

Thank you Garin :), I think I understand it now. Naughty Dragonlance for confusing me ;) So Garin, what should I do with my 512MB of RAM? Bin it or can I install it in slot 2 and have some more RAM? Or would that affect the 2GB I have running at the moment?

Hehe, I was waiting for this post. :)
Usually, you match the colours so put your ram in slots 1 and 3. You cant do any harm in putting them in other slots though. Its just that if you dont match the colours then the ram wont operate in dual channel mode (small performance increase).
Which do I go for? :(
It's like shops closing at 5.30pm. Stupid. I think we're the only country in the world that has this.
Think about all the extra jobs we could make for this country if shops opened till 8pm with shift work to ensure people don't work too long hours (unless they want to).
