I know it's your dreams and everything, but starting to learn the guitar in years 7 - 11, just as everybody else is, is not the way to do it.

Gah. Weak argument maybe, but it is just a bandwagon.
Just like my mates and I when we work out. It's healthy competition. I see a friend can do more push ups, I practice more till I'm level. I see a mate can bench press more, I practice till I'm level.
Then we all put on our pink spandex and dance in the gym to "It's Raining Men"
Current favourite is a custom sparkle gold finish Les Paul costing close to a grand and it is the most beautiful object I've ever owned. Problem with that is I'm a little scared to take it out to mates houses to play and get all grouchy when someone trys to touch it. So I more often than not end up playing on a crappy £90 Squire jobbie or the £120 accoustic which is still going strong.
