Heard this one before... first the 3DO, then the failed M2. Now the PS2. But this time it's meant to be different. Using the more popular DVD format, with the ability to play movies, and having great games, the PS2 is meant to be the definative next-gen console. So why then have others not followed? Microsoft announced that the standard Xbox will not play DVD movies, and that function will require an upgrade, with a similar story surrounding the Gamecube. Sega have even got the DVDreamcast bundle. But none come with DVD film playback as standard.

Simple fact simple fact is that gamers buy consoles for one thing- games! Sega, Nintendo and Microsoft seem to have realised that- offering DVD playback at an extra cost. Sony on the other hand have other objectives. The PS2 is meant to mark Sony's entrance as the premier living room "owner". But will this succeeed. The simple fact is that Sony seems to have put too much on DVDs and extras and not enough on games. Whereas Sega and Nintendo will always focus 100% on games, Sony's idea of ruling the household may be one of its biggest mistakes. By doing this, they have just ended up mixing an average console (let's face it- considering it has come out a year after the DC, it's not the revolution that it should have been) with an average DVD player. Meanwhile, Sega and Nintendo will habve consoles with great games, while Panasonic and co will have great DVD players.

Ok, so the PS2 will have good games in the future. However, with there have been so many programming problems (jaggies, inability to play some PSone games), that the console has quite simply not been thought out as well as it should have been. Sony's only comfort is that so many companies have invested so much in the PS2 that they can't turn back now.

Just to rub salt into Grix's wounds, apparently the development kits for the Gamecube that Electronic Arts took in last month have all been sent back to Nintendo with a note to the effect: "Please provide instructions."

You've made some valid points-some of them true. BUT:

For one thing, how do you know the Gamecube and the X-Box will be "developer friendly"??

Okay, so maybe Nintendo and Microsoft have made some "promises", but promises can be broken, and anyway, they probably don't know themselves that much.

Also, the Gameube won't be coming out till late next year, so its a while yet, and no one really knows whether it will be "developer friendly". The same goes for the X-Box.

Yeah, Sony making PSOne games may be bad for the current PS2 games, BUT its still making Sony a profit, and once they really good games come out on PS2, everyone will want them.
Also, sice less than half the population who wants a PS2 haven't got one yet, the games aren't going to sell that much, and most people will still be playing on their PSX. Me, for instance.

Thanks for reading, Ant.

PS- Japanese expect way too much of their consoles, and they only care about graphics, so they are dissapointed at the graphics of the current games. But like on the PS2, games-and especially graphics, will get better as the developers begin to go to the full limits of the PS2.

Changed your tune a bit there, Grix?

The support in Japan has quite literally fell through, with nobody interested in the machine anymore, just buying the odd game, but interestingly PS1 sales have increased by a lot.

I think Sony have put their foot in the grave to early by making some very large mistakes.

Firstly, and quite obviously, the difficult programing scares developers off. Before anybody butts in to tell me "it's all rumours", it doesn't matter. If they are scared of the machine, why approuch it? And rumours have to start somewhere, and it certainly wasn't from the competition.

Secondly, and something that many people have overlooked, is the fact that PS1 games are still being made. I honestly believe that this causes a serious problem to Sony.

It's the fact the console won't die out, with the PS2 able to play them, it's the easier option. After all, all the PS2 games are, are updated versions of the PS1 games, and with the PS2 harder to program for, then it seems the easier option, and it will not die out for a while.

By the time it actually does, the PS2 will be wondering what the hell is going on, and the two main competitors will be the Gamecube, because it's developer friendly, and the X-Box, for the same reason.

DVD will also cause a problem, because of the "added bonus" that traps so many innocent minds.

I know from the point I speak, and I know that this can, or cannot happen. But I believe it will. And therefore I have no faith in Sony.

I've heard this all before, we don't like Sony making a household object.
