The reason I joined Blockbusters when it opened in Harlow was because they had a movie I'd busted a gut trying to see for almost 5 years.

"Miracle Mile" starring a youthful Anthony Edwards and some other people.
And it was on Filmfour last weekend. I was surprised as hell to see it listed and sat up most late revisiting one of the most overlooked and under-rated movies ever.

Anthony Edwards plays a musician that meets a woman at a museum and they arrange a date for that evening when she gets off work at midnight in a diner.
He goes back to his place, sets his alarm and falls asleep. Cue power cut, he gets there at 4am and she's gone home. Duh.
As he leaves, the payphone is ringing and he picks it up.
A kid is on the other end of the phone, phoning from a nuclear bunker in South Dakota - very upset and saying "Dad it's me, oh jesus they did it. We're locked in. We're gonna blow our wad in 50 and it's an hour ten until we get it back from them"
Kid realises it's not his dad and starts crying, sounds behind him of soldiers and they shoot the kid. Phone goes dead. Bloke picks up phone and says "Forget what you just heard. Go back to sleep"

Edwards is disbelieving and nervous. Asks anyone in the diner if they know what it's about. An off-duty government worker asks for the details, makes a couple of phone calls and promptly packs her stuff and flees.

You then have 1hr 10 mins real-time of Edwards trying to get across town to the woman he met, and more and more people starting to panic.
You never know if it's the real-deal, if nukes are coming until the final 5 mins.
And I wont spoil it.

If you can find Miracle Mile on DVD anywhere, lemme know because I've only ever seen it twice in 10 years.
