The reason I joined Blockbusters when it opened in Harlow was because they had a movie I'd busted a gut trying to see for almost 5 years.

"Miracle Mile" starring a youthful Anthony Edwards and some other people.
And it was on Filmfour last weekend. I was surprised as hell to see it listed and sat up most late revisiting one of the most overlooked and under-rated movies ever.

Anthony Edwards plays a musician that meets a woman at a museum and they arrange a date for that evening when she gets off work at midnight in a diner.
He goes back to his place, sets his alarm and falls asleep. Cue power cut, he gets there at 4am and she's gone home. Duh.
As he leaves, the payphone is ringing and he picks it up.
A kid is on the other end of the phone, phoning from a nuclear bunker in South Dakota - very upset and saying "Dad it's me, oh jesus they did it. We're locked in. We're gonna blow our wad in 50 and it's an hour ten until we get it back from them"
Kid realises it's not his dad and starts crying, sounds behind him of soldiers and they shoot the kid. Phone goes dead. Bloke picks up phone and says "Forget what you just heard. Go back to sleep"

Edwards is disbelieving and nervous. Asks anyone in the diner if they know what it's about. An off-duty government worker asks for the details, makes a couple of phone calls and promptly packs her stuff and flees.

You then have 1hr 10 mins real-time of Edwards trying to get across town to the woman he met, and more and more people starting to panic.
You never know if it's the real-deal, if nukes are coming until the final 5 mins.
And I wont spoil it.

If you can find Miracle Mile on DVD anywhere, lemme know because I've only ever seen it twice in 10 years.

Filmfour I think?
It's been deleted on VHS and no DVD.

I remember reading a review of it in an ancient film magazine but never ever saw it anywhere. Then Blockbuster had it, I rented it and 2 weeks later it was gone.
Kept my eyes open for it, then forgot. Then by complete accident I caught it on digital.

Well worth checking out and I'm off to have a look at the links.

Sounds very good. It must've been ripped off by that excellent episode of The Outer Limits, where this bloke discovers the world is going to end, so he takes this girl out to enjoy everybody's last night on earth.

This sounds better, though

Which channel? Is it still being shown?

Sounds intriguing. Can't see it on general sale anywhere - looked it up on IMDB and it's a 1989 film. Quite rare, it seems.

This is even better (a few spaces).

Will keep my eyes peeled like a banana in the mitts of an Orang-utan after a five week hunger strike.

Have you ever seen the film 'Murder in Mind'?

Its one of thoses random films that isn't particularly well known, but is absolutely brilliant when you actually watch it. Its got a couple of famous people in it (I forget who).

Anyway, you never know exactly what is going on in it, and it moves your point of reference several times, so you never exactly comfortable with it.

Might be the sort of thing you would like.

No idea. I realised it was on by complete fluke. At the lady's over the weekend, she went to bed ill and I sat up flicking through the movie channels (not having it myself at home).
And lo and behold, Miracle Mile.

It's a lot better than I make it sound. Paranoia, uncertainty, fear. Realistic reactions from him and other people. Worrying that he got it wrong because he's the only one to have taken that call etc.
If you can find it anywhere, let me know cos this is a keeper
