Alan has that witty yet stupid comments which always make you laugh even though you're thinking, what the hell? Who would say that. Brilliant stuff though.
No real favourite here
Brent is excellent, but it was a more disgusting and cringing humour whereas Partridge seems to adapt to his surroundings through his character and make hilarious comments. Actually, ever after I got the boxset with my brother for Partridge I cannot stop saying 'Rolling the ball' or just laughing like him daily at a bad joke, 'Ah-ha!'.
Fantastic, not taking anything away from Brent. Partridge is still surviving as well. Brent is gone :D
Brent's behaviour is always painfully real.
Surealism vs Realism is the key issue: I prefer the former yet find the later to be funny if the observations are sharp.
In this case Alan is the superior comedy package but Brent is a well observed character that deserves recognition.
Partridge is a totally different type of humour. The cringe factor is missing from Partridge - you sit and think "What a nob" and laugh at other people's reactions to him.
Whereas Brent is painful, moments and situations you *have* been in whether you admit it to yourself or not.
They're both damn fine programmes, but to be fair I dont think you can compare them.
Yes Partridge is funny, but the situations are ludicrous and removed from reality. Cow dumped on him? Boss dying just as he's about to sign a contract? Dressing as a vampire and staying in a travel tavern whilst all other guests have to check out? Assaulting the Programmes Director with a cheese on a fork? Thong dream-dancing?
Wheras The Office is mundane. Brent makes you wince and feel embarassed, 9/10 because you've done something similar or had reactions to something you've done that make you think "Oh jesus...."
I disagree that Brent turned into a charicature (sp?), I just think people grew more comfortable with the situations and laughed a lot louder to disguise that sinking, teeth-itching "yep, know that" feeling.
I never really felt sorry for Partridge, because there was that distancing by having almost surreal situations. But in the 2nd series when Brent was told he was redundant, hovering on the verge of tears or wearing that Ostrich outfit and being humiliated by the photographer? Borderline emotional assualt watching that.
Partridge is funny, without question, but it's a nice safe comedy with zero "Oh christ" factor because you'll never be in those situations in your life.
The Office is funny because it confronts your own failures and bombings in life. It's an uncomfortable, sweating laugh because however amusing, you're still thinking "Christ please stop now, just stop"
Like the 2nd series meeting with Brent trying to gee everyone into action and lingering on him for almost 30 seconds, watching him wither.
Different comedy, equally funny but for utterly different reasons and reactions.
> I'm firmly in the Alan camp
Ha ha, I've even done it there, look.
"I'm firmly in the Roger camp."
