In other words, why did we evolve a brain so large and powerful, that we can never hope to use its power. Its said that the average human uses less than a quarter of his brain throughout his life.

Fact is, different species evolve at different rates. We evolved from Monkey's, but as we didn't kill them off they are still around.
What you should really be asking is:
"If we evolved from Monkey's, why aren't the other types of animal that are halfway between us and monkey's?"
If species evolve at different rates, how come Gorillas haven't begun the change towards being human? For example...
