Heard it on the news when I was half asleep this morning, so some of this may be a bit wrong:

Apparently, teachers in London and the south east have started a 24 hour strike against, guess what? Low pay.

They want an extra £6,000 a year to help cover the cost of living which is, admittedly, high in those areas.

Do you think this strike would have happened if the firefighters weren't striking?

General thoughts?

From what I've heard they want a 100% increase.

The firefighter situation is a really tricky one for the government - they can't let the situation deteriorate more than it has, because lifes are at stake. But, if they appease the firefighters, then they run the risk of having all the public sector unions knocking on their door - teachers could just be the beginning...

they are doing it because of the firefighters. The firefighters were offered a massive pay rise, they held out for more, and they offered more. It's obvious that this tactic works (even though blair is fighting it), and the teachers are getting in on the game too.

No, they arent saving lives everyday, but they are training the next generation to forward this earth. They do deserve the money just so they can get by, and they are right to strike over it, as they have applied before for more cash and were just laughed at.

But in my opinion, the government want to stop looking at trying to negotiate with these people, rather try and figure out what they did wrong to put this country in such a financial mess in the first place.

Noone can afford a house and noone can afford to live unless you have some job where the title doesnt explain what you actually do. these are far more important issues that the government should be looking at, and if these were sorted then the firemen and the teachers and all the other public sector workers that are considering striking for more money wouldn't have to.

They aren't doing it for fun you know.
