On the same subject, I have two speakers. One with controls on, and one that reacts to the controls and plays sounds. The one with the controls doesn't work, doesn't play sound or change anything with the knobs (eeeeeww!). The other speaker will play, but won't react to changes with the knobs on the first one.

What's up?

I get check boxes that mute the sound, :)
I don't get blue screens on Win98, infact it's only crashed once in the last three months as far as I know, I hate itbecause it's so damn ugly, and the fact that MAYA, Apache and my Webcam don't run on it.

This might sound stupid but many people have done it, make sure the speaker jack is plugged into the soundcard and not the speaker out on the modem, also most of the later sound cards are colour coded, if this is the case then you need to plug your speakers in the green socket on the sound card NOT THE MODEM, also what did you do before it stopped working.

I know that, it's just an option you have to enable if using XP. Seeing as this is Microsoft, it is no doubt a brilliant and very thoughtful addition to their new OS.

Well it could me a load of things, not just colume..etc, he may have dropped his case and the soundcard could have come loose or the cards died, maybe the drivers have accidently been deleted and the Windows standard ones don't support the media hes playing...etc

Speakers are extremely easy things to troubleshoot.

Stick an MP3 on, make sure the volume's up in Windows and on the speakers, then fiddle around with various sockets at the back of your computer.
Don't plug it into anythign that glows or blinks red though.
