Although when the Dreamcast first came out it did make such a big profit as expected, it will rake in the cash this Christamas.
Parents around the world find it hard to get christmas presents so choose the easy way out by getting a console or games. And the only good new console out is the Dreamcast. I overheard a conversation in a shop about this guy saying they were running LOW on syock of Dreamcasts. They have an offer on for 3 games and a Dreamcast for about £150, which is an ideal pressie, and I also know someone who is getting one for Christams.
This is where SONY have messed up big time, they only realease some pre-orderes Ps2's for Christmas, so Sega get the christamas cash. Which makes people annoyed at sony for waiting forone they give up, and get a dreamcast this year and next year the Nintendo Gamecube.

I'm sure I may have got a PS2 this christmas if there was not a shortage, but I may not want one next time around, I was thinking of getting a MP3 player much more fun!
You've got a point there, but it made me wonder just how 'big' the revenue is at Xmas for the console manufacturers compared to the rest of the year. I think that perhaps Sony rake in enough not to worry too much about it, but I agree that if they had 500,000 consoles on the shelves by now, they would all be snapped up by December 25th, so they did miss out.
