In order to justify the move to Pay-2-Play, they had to hire more expensive servers to do the workload.
Then Chello pulled out from under them, and they had to buy their own. It's been a debt covering exercise ever since.

Not even on the pay to play version? I know they had trouble with abyssmal clickthrough rates in the earlier rounds, but I thought they'd make some money on subscriptions. I guess not then.

Played PA from rounds 3 to 7. 3 i was a n00b, 4 I rocked, 5 I got utterly played by VTS scum, 6 I rocked and 7 I was just a freebie n00b.

I played Planetarion two years ago, and it was an excellent game. I think it was in the fourth found back then. Sadly, I really haven't been able to afford the time to play it since. The whole 'pay to play' thing finally put me off the idea of playing it completely.
I also tried Utopia for a couple of months the following year. It's a very similar thing, but far less team and communication orientated. Not as much fun by a long way.
Why have the planetarion team decided this is to be the last round? Are profits dropping, or do their people no longer have the free time to run it?
