I have been commissioned to produce a small film festival. I’ve decided to do it aimed at those who are into independent movies and/or movies that have spawned a series. I’m going to ask you, movie fans, a few questions and as my focus group I hope you can answer in a way that will aid me in my film festival. If you’re not a large movie fan then please restrain from answering.

Would you be interested in seeing independent movies? And if so what sort of Independent movies? What style of movie are you interested in?

Would a 3-day festival for example where a series of films were shown such as Bond movies be a good idea? Would seeing a series of films like Halloween be something you would enjoy seeing?

What else would attract you to a small film festival? The promise of a celebrity? How about a talk on how to produce independent films including filming and editing? How about the opportunity to make your own film there and then?

Would souvenirs interest you like T-shirts, mugs etc… especially for the event?

Any other comments please add them here:

The Film Festival workshops may occur outside allowing you to create a short film and then editing it inside. Meanwhile a building with movies being shown simulataneously may be done so the ability to walk from place to place like you suggested Starlight will go ahead but a mix of outdoor and indoor. Any other thoughts on this?

You want to be quite careful here, some independant movies can be complete tosh, my Film Studies teacher said he once watched a film which was a continous shot of a wall, just a wall, nothing happened, he seemed quite interested in it but to you and me that's not exactly what I'd class as good. A particular genre, hmm. It's not my personal choice but there seems to be a strong Zombie film vibe going around lately, it could be serious (Day of the Dead) or complete spoof (Dawn of the Dead), I'm sure that would interest people.

If you did this it would have to be either popular or something most people would never have heard of, Bond films would be popular no doubt, but I'm sure there aren't that many fans of Halloween. You'd really need a popular series to do this. Definently a good idea though.

Yep. All of those are great ways to spark interest. If possible though getting a real Director to speak or awnser question would definently be something special, there are lots of people out there that would be interested in seeing/talking to a real director I'm sure.

Not really, well not me personally. T-Shirts might be good but they would need to be simple, not big banners blazed across the frot which look geekish, maybe designed with the Festivals name on the back? Oh and women walking around you festival wearing them is always a good advertising plan. :)

It would be better if this was all outside (weather permittig I know) where you can walk into different sites/buildings to watch films, talk to people etc. If feels more like a Festival when it's outside. No real idea why. Good luck.

Everything I guess, I can't narrow it down to a genre, I guess anything that involved depth into the characters usually grabs my attention.

If I was a fan of the series then yeah I'd love it.

I'd go for the atmosphere and the chance to meet people.

Yes, I suppose it'd be interesting to see some. Most independant films I've seen that have worked well have been Comedies, so that would be my prefered style.

such as Bond movies be a good idea? Would seeing a series of films

I personally love series of films, especially if they lead on from the last (like Back to the Future), so this would be brilliant. Bond films are quite a good dea because you get lots of variation in the films; action, comedy and romance.

What else would attract you to a small film festival? The promise of a
celebrity? How about a talk on how to produce independent films

I'm not sure about a celebrity, but making films would be something new and bit of an insight as to how films are made. This would be good for people who are and aren't interested, really, because even though it doesn't make me extememely excited, it's something different.

If there was exclusive merchandise, this would be a pretty good idea, but if it's just something you can find any old place there wouldn't be much point.

Any other comments please add them here: Some more interaction other than just the film making. Maybe voting for the best film in a series or something, or a prize draw.

I am a member of many online internet editing communites for independently made films. I don't really like fan-films and much prefer the films that really do try and be something the director had always dreamed about. I really love to see how each different genre is edited and how a film follows conventions against other films of a similar kind.

I would prefer to see a mixture of blockbuster professionally produced films as well as independly produced films which have been made by variety of different people. That would interest me.

A showcase of films from people within the audience would be excellent. All within different genres. Fan-boys are the ones that are attracted by celebrities, whereas I would go to a film festival if it had a showcase of media I hadn't seen before.

Maybe a copy of the showcase shown that day, but nothing else.

Specialist film lovers are the main group of people i'm interested in which is why I'm asking you guys. Is there anything specific you think I should offer? Should we watch a film and then have a 30 minute interval discussing what we just saw in groups maybe even do a competition based around it. How many films should I have on show and would other things like Dance/Drama shows shown in between films be useful?

Should we have several places where films can be watched at certain times so films are shown constantly throughout the day and you can pick and choose if you want to see film A, Dance show, Film B or go to the souvenir section or workshop. Does this all sound appealing to you and more to the point would you go?

I don't know how much people want to beatch about low cinematic coverage... You should remember that most film-lovers are frustrated directors who want to talk about how the film is made as much as issues of low distribution.

Most film festivals are a mixture of premieres - if you can hook up with a marginally big brit release then that would help + premieres from local film makers - and classics/obscure stuff based around a theme.

I'd go down that route, rather than showing blockity busters, because people who want to see all the bond films back to back don't much care for how they were made, they probably belong to the escapist school of cinema. People who frequent film festivals like well-made films and like to talk about film making. You're likely to get more of those in than people who just want to watch a film.

I havent seen much of the stuff, but I dunno exactly what is independent. I have seen a bit, but not enough to talk about, sorry! I am mostly interested in action or comedies really.

Yeah definitely. Especially as the films are quite close to eachother, so you know what is going on from film to film, that would be quite handy.

Hmmm, I don't know really. Make sure it was set up well, good films, and yeh a celebrity might make it more enjoyable.

Well if it was a small festival then the souvenirs would have to be quite cheap I think. But yeh, I am always up for some mugs, t-shirts etc helps get the atmosphere up and stuff. (:)

Sorry Chris, dont think I really helped ya there. (:)

Typical topic of conversation is smaller films like Donnie Darko and Bowling for Columbine two classic movies getting relativly low cinematic coverage in comparision to the latest Harry Potter movie for example. The concept of a discussion resulting around this could well be a great idea for me to implement into my film festival.
