Don't know about anyone else, but I say New York deserves this more than anywhere else.

It'd be a great way of showing Osama that his plans have done nothing, and on the practical side New York would be a great place, and it owuld bring in tons of investment money over the coming years, money New York could use to redevelop areas.

Earthquakes are natural occurences and unavoidable, fanatics in airliners are not avoidable. No one in their right mind is going to hold the Olympics in India for twenty years at least, in fact until India resolves it's dispute with Pakistan it ain't gonna happen anytime.

I agree India needs help, but I think if India really did need help it could do without one of the fastest growing nuclear weapons programs in the region, which in turn forces Pakistan to do similar.

Earthquake deaths in India are made worse by lack of building regulation in many areas, poor sanitation in many urban areas, lack of emergency personnel for trauma/disaster cases, poor local preparations, and a never ending punch up between self interested NGO's.... Deaths in India could have been avoided easily, not all of them, but many could.... whereas 9/11 deaths were unpreventable. The towers were built correctly, there were plenty of personnel, every piece of technology that could be used was, and no one came out alive once they came down.

So yes, give them to New York because they'll do a good show. Unlike Britain's Commonwealth games where we charged visiting teams for waste paper bins e.t.c. Ridiculous.

I agree.
Which is why I suggest we introduce steroid abuse as standard.
It would make it more interesting all round.

"And welcome to the javelin and....jesus christ, he's lobbed it out of the stadium. That's gonna spear a dog or possibly an old woman.Cool!"

It would make it worth watching, because right now watching athletes do stuff that relates in no way to modern life is rubbish.
And yes, I'm sure it's good for them and their families blah blah blah but come on, who actually cares?

Unless you get Eddie The Eagle, that Samoan shot-putter that ran the sprint or that Nigerian "Eel" bloke that could barely swim?
That's the spirit of The Olympics, I'll watch a bunch of average people having a go.
But watching highly trained athletes run/jump/swim is dull.

Who can run the fastest.
Who can jump the longest.
Who can throw a spear the furthest.

I find the whole thing bloody stupid.

The problem with holding it in India is that it will be a little inaccesible.

For example how many people would go to India to see the olympics? Not a lot, there is high poverty and no doubt high crime.

And if the above is untrue, im sure its most peoples perception of India.

So not like now then?

"Welcome to The Olympics"
"What happens?"
"Well, some athletes do stuff and win medals"
"Ok, any weapons?"
"Nope"
"Any change to the world once they win?"
"Well....no"
"So what's the point?"
"Sponsorship and ratings"
"What about physical excellence?"
"You gay?"

Hang on

2012?
10 years from now?
Who the hell knows what state the world'll be in by then. With any luck, it'll all be like Mad Max 2 and The Olympics will be held behind barb-wired compounds whilst we circle in The Wasteland throwing Feral Kids over the wire to compete in the "100 Yard Dash To The Gate"

Deserves it?

Because it was a victim of terrorist attacks?
Phft.
"Poor New York, let's hold The Olympics as a sign of respect".

Please. Why not hold them in India where they had the massive earthquake, they need help more right now and the boost to local economy would be a massive help to them. And more people died, yet merited less column inches than Sept 11th.

And before *anyone* starts, I'm not making light of those attacks. I'm simply saying there are worse situations in the world currently than a tragic event of last year.
