I just saw something on a site about 'Back-Ordering' domain names. Is this legit? Does this mean that it's first come first served when mine runs out, or do I get first dibs from the ISP?

Well, generally thats the rule. You should be informed when you need to renew your Domain Name. However, sometimes, the Domain can officialy run out, but it isn't taken of the register list immidiatly, or the Company who your dealing with will hold it for another month or so before fully releasing it for resale.
Generally, its best to renew before it runs out, but it isn't necessarily to late if you don't.
However, the 'Back-Order' thing doubtfully works, as I don't believe Internic, Nominet UK or any other Domain Register allow for people to reserve Domains for when they become available on the date they expire, they allow for the person who currently owns it first refusal.

They usually warn you about a month or two before the domain runs out, if you don't buy it again then it's first come first served again.
