I know what your going to say "Not another Rare topic!" but this is a bit different. Since I read the CUBE magazine in the latest issue I am outraged at what I have learned.
Since RARE has just released SFA before moving to MS, MS will get a small percentage of the money RARE gets from the sales of SFA! They are getting money off the game us Nintendoids have released (well soon for Europe).

Then again, on the Xbox, Banjo doesn't have to compete with Mario anymore.
The Xbox owners only call platformers kiddy out of jealousy because they have none of their own.

PS2 owners used to call Mario kiddy until Jak and Daxter came out, and then it changed to "Jak and Daxter is better than Mario!".

As for staff leaving, it happens all the time to all companies.
These newer designers have aspired to their position the same way their predecessor did. They might be better or worse, but overall, it won't be any different to the so-called old Rare.

Anything about the Alien levels being designed after the split-up is just some theory idea of why they were messed up.
The plot goes that way from early on in the story.
What went wrong is that Perfect Dark isn't suited to alien levels.

There will be a few odd changes due to MS's buy out, like the lack of Nintendo characters in games but having seen the Kameo trailer, I don't think Rare will especially miss that.

Nintendo don't need Rare anymore because they have plenty of third parties.
Rare don't need Nintendo because they've built their own game design expertise.

So they split, and Rare went to be poor and needy.
And the news that Rare is develloping for a more powerful console with huge online plans can only be a good thing...

Also i think people are over looking the fact that not al games rare make are "adult" such as banjo. People seem to think of banjo as kiddy so it would be best on gamecube, will it have the same success on xbox with people buying the xbxo to be more "adult", if so why buy banjo.

*note: i dont care if a game is kidy or adult, infact its nothing to do with age but what you as a person is like. But some people are like that.

But i heard that it was near those levels that some developers left, so if thats true perfect dark 0/2 will be made up of "messed" up levels.

But does that mean he will be as good? what i mean is that for games of rares standard you can not afford any slip ups, now every one will be used to how everyone else works so new people may "disrupt" the development.
Also we have no idea whats going on in rare HQ some developers may be totally against joining microsoft so go out of their way to make the game bad.

that what i meant, rare must have had games in development for gamecube, but some of them might have been using nintendos characters so it wont be a simple transfer to xbox as games that were using rares characters.

like i said i have no idea how they will do until they release a game, themselfs. then we can see how well they develop on the xbox and if good developers leaving has made them bad, it could go either way. Make the xbox brilliant or bad.

Boz, although some of Goldeneye's team left Rare, Perfect Dark was fine without them. Some of the later levels were a bit messed with the aliens and stuff, but that wasn't down to them not being "the same Rare".

People join companies, people leave companies.
For every major designer that leaves Rare, an assistant aspires to replace him, having learnt all the tricks from his previous superior and with a whole load of fresh ideas of his own.

Also, NONE of Rare's Xbox games will have Nintendo's characters in.
If they release Donkey Kong Racing, the characters will be changed to non-Nintendo ones. :-)

Why cant anyone see this, microsoft will keep putting money into the company no matter what.

But a lot of talk about developers leaving and such, and the end of perfect dark, leads me to think that they are not the same company, time will tell.

Like someone said many games are in deep development, if you think of how many games they had ready for the GC and only one getting released, star fox, must mean that they have more games that just need transferring over to the xbox. Although how many of those games that could be using nintendo characters, donkey kong racing, is yet to be seen.

Thats the main thing im worried about, im getting an xbox anyway so im not that bothered, but how much did nintendo help in the games, did they help a lot making them great or just a little to add a little polish? time will tell, but if nintendo helpped a lot i dont think rare are going to be that great.

> delays that Perfect Dark saw was due to Nintendo

Well if it was, it was worth it. rather have delays and good games than no delays and bad ones.

So do i in games such as conker and perfect dark cause then they can add as much blood and gore as they like. also the money will help.

uhh...you've got that the wrong way round. Mario is the king of platformers, Banjo was supposed to be the Mario killer, but neither of them managed it.

I agree. But Nintendo now have $370,000,000 to mess around with. That immediatly needs to be invested into producing PD/Banjo killers. Now.

Which begs the question, why sell in the frist place?

But thats my opinion.

My thoughts on the whole matter:

So Rare have moved on. Away from the eccentricities of Nintendo and into the ambitious arms of Microsoft. But how will Rare fare after all of this?

First of all, anyone that is predicting doom for Rare is wrong. Microsoft hasn’t invested $375 million in the company to tear it apart. They want Rare to do for the Xbox what it did for the N64, produce top quality games time and time again. That's why it was so important to Microsoft that Rare's characters were part of the deal. To show people that Rare will be the same company, producing the same quality of games, just on a different machine, the most powerful machine, as Microsoft keep telling us.

5 games in 2 years is an ambitious target for Rare though, and any Nintendo fan will have laughed at this statement, considering it to be extremely unlikely, given the delays we've seen with Rare games in the past. This is where the fears come in that Microsoft will rush Rare, and the quality will be lacking. Well I don't think Microsoft is that stupid. As I said before, you don't invest $375 million and then not let the company do its best work.

In the past Rare have worked alongside Nintendo on a number of projects, and perhaps they'll miss this. Undoubtedly they must have learnt a great deal from Nintendo, but at times surely Nintendo have also hindered development. StarFox Adventures was coming along quite nicely as Dinosaur Planet and by all accounts the whole StarFox angle in the game seems a little 'tacked on'. If left to their own devices Rare would have had Dinosaur Planet out much sooner. You have to wonder whether some of the delays that Perfect Dark saw was due to Nintendo wanting the game changed to keep it within Nintendo's guidlines, because of their wholesome image.

It seems to me that Rare will benefit from being under the wing of Microsoft, and have a little more freedom than Nintendo allowed them. When Conker returns I can't see Microsoft hiding him from their typical market the way that Nintendo did. As such I can see Rare venturing further into the more mature games, without the restraints but on them by Nintendo, worried about their family image.

In the past some of the games that Rare produced were similar to Nintendo’s games. Banjo Kazooie was similar to Super Mario 64, and Donkey Kong Racing was similar to Mario Kart. On the Xbox Rare won’t be competing against Nintendo, and their platformers should be considered the best available for the Xbox. However, the Xbox already has it’s fair share of first-person shooters, and the next Perfect Dark game could well be competing against Halo 2. If it’s not competition in one genre its another! Rare are also said to be working on a racing game. Personally I hope this will be in a similar vein to Diddy Kong Racing, or take on the concept of Donkey Kong Racing, obviously replacing the characters, as the Xbox has plenty of realistic racers as it is.

Another area in which Rare could excel on the Xbox is in online gaming. Most of Rare’s games in the past have included incredible multi-player sections. With Xbox Live, Rare will finally get the opportunity to move beyond 4 players, and into online gaming. Perfect Dark online would be a very appealing game indeed, and just think of the potential for an online Blast Corps, or Jet Force Gemini.

The future should be bright for Rare, finally allowed to spread their wings. They won't miss being able to work on Nintendo franchises, as they've proved time and again that they're capable of creating their own. They may well miss some of the expertise that Nintendo offered them, but they'll be more than happy to let this go in favour of more freedom, and no more restraints.

MS won't be rushing Rare.

MS have all the quantity they need on their little black box right now.
I know that the 5 games within 2 years originally sounded like there was rushing going on, but it seems that many of these games are already in deep devellopment.

Kameo, for instance, is almost finished and will be ready for release in Spring.
