If Common Sense is so common, why is it such a valuable trait?

Surely if it's common, then pretty much everyone has it, and so there need not be such a fuss about it.

Thoughts?

I think everyone has common sense - that's why it's common - but some of the time people don't choose to apply it. People like to take risks and step 'off the rails' every now and then.

Just how dull would life be if everyday everyone lived their lives ridgedly following the safe mediocrity of common sense.

That question made my head hurt.

Maybe it's common as in not posh.
Like the pikey of sense.
Or something?

Most people DO have common sense (for general, basic things) therefore the term is correct

Surely the word common only implies most people have it?

It only suggests it is widespread, or frequently occuring.

You must be thinking of universal sense :)

Depends what you apply it to. Its used far too broadly now.

People say "x + y - 654 = z..... its common sense". This is rubbish because some people understand, some do not.

However, "don't stick your head in a meat grinder....its common sense" I think applies. Everyone (without debating about those who are mentally unstable) realises its not a good idea ie common sense.

Extreme examples yes, but I think they illustrate what I mean

there is no such thing as common sense.

the word "common" implies everybody has it, but they don't, therefore it is merely a figment of your imagination.

"average sense" or "senibility" are far more apt.
