Not going in to AMD vs Intel, but for me, AMD have the right combination of price and performance, and decent overclocking opportunities, hence, I use them...Place I work will only ever build Intel PCs, for reliability, but I can't say I've ever really had problems with AMDs..

Motherboard is what decids what your allowed to have :p Also, I don't think a £100 board would be the same quality as a £30 one, but yes, a good CPU, RAM, HDD, Gfx card are needed for a good PC.. but a good motherboard helps..
