Help needed please:
I have an ASUS A7S333 Motherboard with Geforce III card, after putting together my new PC everything is fine except …. I cannot get any display on my monitor and it whistles !, have I connected something up incorrectly OR have I got some of my processor/memory switches set wrong (I have a XP1600 CPU and 256mb of DDR???) – there are no switch setting in the manual and I couldn’t find any on the Asus website.
Please help, UT2003 is waiting !

Well it does have *something* to do with the wattage of your PSU because most people only have one running their PC. And once you add up your fans, USB peripherals etc then you are draining a heck of a lot of power. And if you don't have enough then your PC may not POST. So, yes, you should buy a quality brand, but you also need a unit with enough grunt to run a modern PC.

ps Turbonutter: yes, you are insane ;)

Monitors have there own power so they won't take anything from your pc even if you add a female to male connector out of your 400watt PSU as that is just a straight through connection.

I have the following running off my 400w PSU:

XP2000 @ 1.82ghz (10% oc)
GeForce 3 Ti550
Voodoo 5 5500 (which has its own power connector!!)
SB Live 5.1
D-link NIC
7200rpm HD
CD-RW
Floppy
EPoX 8KHA+
PCI extractor fan
AKASA blue LED fan

There's also a baybus connected to it which powers:
1 120mm fan
2 80mm fans (YS-TECH 3000rpm)
1 cold cathode

System is as solid as a rock, and at times it;s had more in there (2 extra 80mms at one point).

PLUS this PSU powers the PSU on a second computer (jesus I'm insanse), which is a K6-2 with nothing really remarkable in it. 3 HDDs and a CD-ROM.

Wow!

I think 400w is more than enough.

I want to know though, will a monitor draw more power than the computer? I want to plug this 17" into it instead. It'll be a pain to rewire but I don't like bringing a box down every time a want to fiddle with a screwdriver.

It's got nothing to do with the wattage of the PSU itself it's to do with the lines staying high, so if you have a lot of thing using voltage form your PSU you will see lower 12/5/3 volt lines which will cause system unstability, I have 2 300watt PSU's in my system one for the Mobo, Hdd, cdrom, dvd rom, cd-rw and floppy drive on one PSU and all the other fans including CPU fan on a second PSU and my Pc is overclocked and runs stable as anything.

I think that using a 300W PSU with an Athlon system, you're sailing pretty close to the wind. Especially if you use a stock model that comes 'free' with a case, where the stated power output is more of a guesstimate than anything else. In my experience it is quite random: you might get away with it, you might not. Me and my brother built identical systems about a year ago: mine worked perfectly, his was very unstable. Upgrading his PSU solved the problem.

Enermax are the best I've come across, especially the whisper models that have adjustable fans so that you only get a lot of a noise when you need a lot of cooling. Incidentally, the Enermax PSU I bought knocked 7 degrees off my CPU temp.

would think 350 watts was enuff... i think im on 300-350 watts atm with a Athlon 1ghz, geforce 2, SB128D etc.. works fine 400 may be the only option for me when i get a new rig to ensure its 100% stable o.O

I have a Macron 400w PSU and it's running a hell of a lot with no problems. It's best to get the biggest PSU you can afford anyway.
