Turok Evolution Review (Gamecube)
By Elite Chaos

So far this game has had a lot of hype, both good and bad.
With the three week late gamecube version, here is the review.

First Impressions
Upon loading, your blessed with a great intro screen, showing an enemy standing un-aware against a carved stone "Turok", the camera swings to the left to show Tal'Set's war club gliding across the screen striking his head, he falls to the ground bleeding.
And Thats just the start screen!

Your then treated to a intro movie and your first mission is to find the keys.
The jungle looks lush with tonnes of interactive scenary and plenty of lifeform, but on closer inspection you will notice some of the games minor bugs. When up close agaisnt the grass and vegitation the 2d sprites used begin to pixelate. A nice touch is how Acclaim have managed to bring the jungle to life realistically, with the vegitation swaying in the wind, and being trampled from many of the games enemies and lifeforms.

Controls
The Default controls are fine, using R to shoot, B + Y to change weapons, C-stick to aim, L to duck, Z to zoom, X to change weapon mode and The analogue stick to move around.

The flying missions are similar, with R to shoot the mounted gun, and L to fire a rocket.
And B + X can be used to bank, Y to speed up and A to slow down.

Gameplay
Along with the lifelike jungles are many different terrain types including cities and desert. And along to the many on-foot missions are some great flying missions!

The flying missions have Tal'Set upon the back of a well armed Quetzalcoatlus!
These mission add tonnes of fun to the game, with seek & destroy with many other missions.

The weapons in turok are very unique, each with a secondary functions!
War Club
Bow
Tek Bow (Enhanced Bow with Scope, with 3 different types of dart, Normal, Explosive and poison)
Pistol
Sniper Scope (Addon Scope For pistol)
Shotgun
--Quad Shot (Lets you charge up shotgun shots for more power)
Grenades
--Sticky Grendaes (When Using grenades hit the Y button to change them to sticky grenades, which can sticl to walls, ceilings, and enemies!)
Flechette Gun
--Minigun Barrels (18 Barrel addon for the Flechette Gun)
Flame Thrower
--Napalm Alternate (Secondary function for the flamethrower that allows you to lob projectiles)
Spider Mine (This is a mine that when laid, can be remotely controlled, and can do numorous secondary functions)
--Lure (Secondary Function that Lures enemies)
--Bomb (Detonates the Spider Mine)
--Gas (Dispenses poisonous gas)
--Abort (Aborts the Spider Mine and goes back to first person mode)
Rocket Launcher
--Swarm Bore (Fires 5 homing projectiles that tag on to five parts of an enemy body and explodes!)
--Nuke Attachment (Self Explantory, yes thats right A MINI-NUKE!)
Plasma Cannon
--Seeker Upgrade (Upgrades the plasma Cannon to seek enemies)
--Chain Upgrade (Chain Lightning)
Antigrav Beam
--Gravity Disruptor (Sends enemies flying!)
--Antigrav Burst (Charges the Antigrav to make more powerful)
Crossbow
Darkmatter Cube
--Secondary Form (Sucks enemies into a vortex)

Phew well thats a stunning 33 variations of weapons!
Says it all really...

The AI overall is great as it uses a system called "Squad Dynamics" Allowing the enemies to work together to hunt you, or to guard. And the raptors are especially great as they try to hunt you down in packs!

Overall, gameplay gets better as you progress.

Graphics.
The enemy and character models are rendered well, and have great animations. The lifeforms including Monkeys, wild deer and all the dinosaurs look very realistic.
Apart from the odd "Pixel-City" When crawling in the grass, the landscapes look very lifelike and undisturbed (Until you go in there a shoot a few trees down!).
In the later levels the lighting is put to good use, my only complaint is the wate surface looks poor, and when rising from the water there are a few graphical glitches, but saying that underwater the camera distorts nicely!

Sound
The jungle beats in the background really add atmosphere and the dinosaurs react wells sound-wise.
The weapon sounds are satifying. When sneaking up upon enemies you are able to eavesdrop into there conversations. As well as the jungle scenary the sounds are just right, with all the bird and animal clips you would expect.

Multiplayer

The modes you can play as are as follows:
Deathmatch
Team Deathmatch
Hunter
Capture The Flag
One Flag
Last Man
Monkey Tag
Turok Fight
Team Turok Fight
Warrior Rage
Blood Bath
Beginner Deathmatch
Sniper Match
Flight

With these modes are many customisable options and a wealth of characters to choose.
And well over 10 Arenas to fight in.
The added multiplayer flight mode is a great bonus!

Overall Multiplayer is awesome, great fun for you and the mates!.....

Overall Opinion.

Very glad I purchased this game, its only problems are the pixelating, graphical glitches and the every so often framerate slowdown, none of which greatly effect the game.

Above Average Graphics
Excellent Sound
Above Average On single player missions.
And Excellent on multiplayer.
Fairly Involving story.
